The antique icon of the Resurrection that you can see in the featured image is a good example of the influence of Western European art on Russian iconography. The icon itself was painted by an anonymous master from the Russian North (Vologda region) in the 18th century, while its silver oklad was made much later in St. Petersburg in the 19th century. The work is considered a wonderful example of the late Baroque style of Eastern Orthodox iconography. Learn more about it on our blog.

The Orthodox icon in the featured picture is distinguished by the inclusion of “The Only Begotten Son” scene, also known as Monogenis. It is enclosed in the medallion in the uppermost tier. What you see is the illustration of the troparion (a short hymn of one stanza) to the Church dedicated to the Economy of Salvation. Traditionally, the scene of the Resurrection is the centerpiece surrounded by the Great and Minor Feasts and images of the Four Evangelists. The work was created in the 1840s in Palekh.

While being one of the most vital moments in whole Christianity, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is also an event that raises many questions. For example, some people believe that it was only a spiritual resurrection, which is half true because it is clearly described as both the spiritual and physical presence of the Lord. Some may also argue whether Roman soldiers could fall asleep so that someone could move the large rock and steal Jesus’ body without detection. Was that even possible?

Fortunately, people’s assumptions and long-held beliefs don’t make the event any less valuable. Right now, you can take a look at the rare 19th-century holy icon depicting the very same Resurrection of the Messiah. Looks astounding, doesn’t it?

The hand-painted icons depicting the Resurrection of Jesus constitute a principal part of our collection. In the picture, you can see one such antique treasure made in the second half – the end of the 19th century. The centerpiece of the panel is dedicated to the scene of the Resurrection of Christ, which consists of two parts: the “Rising from the Tomb” and “Harrowing of Hades.” It is surrounded by the images of the Four Evangelists: John the Theologian, Mark, Matthew, and Luke. You can also see 12 border scenes of the main Church Feasts of the liturgical year, which make the entire composition even more complex.
