riku hums quietly  ,  glancing at roxas from the corner of his eye.  of course he sees roxas  ,  what else is there to see ??  hesitantly  ,  quietly  ,  he leans over  ,  setting his hand over the blonde’s.  he lifts his gaze for a moment  ,  looking into the fire before he speaks  ,  clearing his throat.

‘ you say that like no one ever has. ’ 

there’s no malice or bite to his words  ,  as if he knows them to be true.  it makes him frown a bit  ,  but he doesn’t say anything for another moment  ,  blinking. 

‘ .....that’d be a shame. ’

the hero just  smiles  ,  shakes his head  &  takes roxas’ hands in his own.  though  technically  roxas isn’t wrong  ,  or  wasn’t  wrong at one point  ,  that was never who he is  ,  what  he is.  he looks down to their hands now  &  hums  ,  looking him in the eye again.  that’s the only way they look alike  ,  really.  even just at that  ,  roxas is  already  so different from him  ,  not a part of  something  ,  but a  whole  all on his own.

‘ you’re you, roxas.  and that’s not nobody. ’

sora smiles  ,  swinging their hands lightly.  how could roxas be  nobody  if he’s standing here  ,  if everyone sees him  ,  knows  him. 

‘ you’re roxas, who likes sea-salt ice cream and spending time with his friends.  you’re the one who saved me.  you saved your friends.  and you have a heart, so that makes you somebody. ’ 

grinning  ,  sora lets go of one of the blonde’s hands to poke at the  center  of chest with a giggle  ,  light  &  soft. 

‘ you’re not a nobody.  you never were, not to me. ’

riku  jerks  slightly when a piece of hair is tucked behind his ear  ,  blinking almost  owlishly  .  he wasn’t used to that  ,  or any kind of  gentle  affection from  anyone  ,  really.  it was made  more  surprising coming from roxas.  almost just as sheepishly  ,  riku twirls the loose strand around his fingers  ,  looking away.  his voice comes  quietly  ,  if not  shyly  ,  when he speaks.

‘ no, it.....it’s fine. ’ 

words are barely mumbled  ,  &  to busy his hands  ,  he re-ties his hair  ,  tucking in the loose strand  &  clearing his throat quietly. 

‘ .....thanks. ’

surprisingly enough  ,  riku thinks  ,  they don’t make a bad team.  it’s not as though heartless were crawling out of the ground  ,  but there were a fair few  ,  &  the two of them made quick work of most of them.  still  ,  with every swing of his keyblade  ,  the fighting more  mindless  than anything.  not mindless  enough  ,  riku thinks as he’s sent flying by a rather  large  heartless.  struggling to recover  ,  he fumbles for braveheart  &  it slips  just  out of his grasp  ,  fading into light as he’s  slammed  into the ground less than gracefully.

he doesn’t register the choked noise he makes  ,  nor anything past the pain of landing on his hip  ,  the one that was still  damaged  after all this time  ,  just like him.

he’s prepared to take another hit  ,  he can already see it coming  ,  &  he braces himself for it...

.....but the hit doesn’t come.  keyblades  clang  &  roxas blocks it  ,  giving him enough time to summon his  own  keyblade once more  &  finish it  ,  watching it disappear into a cloud of darkness.

roxas is saying  something  ,  but it doesn’t reach riku’s ears over his heartbeat  &  the sound of his feet against the ground.

in a split second  ,  his keyblade is dismissed  &  he leans down &  kisses  roxas before his brain can catch up  ,  before he can think about what  exactly  he’s done.

his brain comes to a  screeching  halt when he jolts back  ,  cheeks red  &  eyes wide.  he’s expecting rejection  ,  they’re barely friends  &  now he’s made it impossible to stay even as that  ,  &  his cheeks burn  red  with shame.  when he speaks  ,  his voice is soft  ,  afraid to break something else in this moment.

‘ sorry.  i-i should....we should...keep moving. ’

it’s out of his mouth before riku can stop it  ,  &  for a moment  ,  his hands freeze.  he shakes any thoughts  ,  any  feelings  away  &  returns to patching up the few scrapes  &  cuts that weren’t quite enough to warrant healing magic.  still  ,  to see him as hurt as he’d  been  ,  riku wasn’t too proud to say it turned his stomach.  he still wasn’t sure how to deal with that  ,  so he pushes it aside  ,  boxes it up nice  &  neat  ,  where he won’t have to think about it.

‘ if you’re hurt like that and i....and someone can’t get to you to help, you’re putting yourself in danger. ’ 

a quiet sigh leaves him  ,  &  one of riku’s hands sits on the blonde’s shoulder now  ,  careful as he looks away. 

‘ just....be careful.  please. ’

it’s  wheezed  out from where he lays on the ground  ,  in a  heap  of aching muscles  &  joints.  sure  ,  he can take a few solid hits  &  get back up again  ,  but right now  ,  riku feels like he just got run over by a  truck  .  everything  aches  ,  he knows it’ll be worse if he doesn’t get up  ,  but he can’t seem to find the  energy  to.

‘ stop... stop worryin’ about me, idiot. ’ 

riku turns his head to the side  &  spits out  something  that was pooling in his mouth  ,  unsure of what it really is.  it’s  red  against the ground  ,  must’ve gotten some in his mouth somehow.  he wrinkles his nose up  &  sighs  ,  weakly trying to push roxas away. 

‘ can take care’a myself.  s’not....s’not safe. ’

riku’s  surprised  .  he didn’t expect roxas to be the one to make the first move  ,  extend an olive branch after  everything  riku had done to him  ,  to his friends.  he’s not sure what to think of it  ,  what to  do  with it.  for a moment  ,  he stands there  ,  gaping like a fish out of water  &  he wants to  kick  himself.  out of habit  ,  he lightly grips his wrist  ,  the same one the blonde had  broken  (  did he remember that now ??  )  ,  &  looks down at the ground for a moment.

might as well get it off his chest.

‘ ....thanks.  and for what it’s worth...i’m sorry.  for everything. ’

they aren’t a  thing  ,  not really.  not in the way other people would think  ,  with how close they were now.  riku knew that  ,  they  both  knew that  ,  they were simply riku  &  roxas  &  they  happened  to be together right now.  nothing special.

&  yet  ,  riku makes the move to hold roxas’ hand in his as they walk through twilight town  ,  doing nothing in particular.  riku’s never really spent  time  here before  ,  not the real thing at least.  it’s  different  from the simulated version in some ways  ,  it’s  warmer  ,  for one.  he couldn’t hold roxas’ hand there like he could now.

it’s  nice  .

they’re up on the clock tower by the end of the day  ,  &  riku decides that sea-salt is probably his  least  favorite ice cream flavor.  he eats it anyways  ,  he’s learned not to care too much about the taste of things.  when he finishes  ,  he looks over to roxas  ,  hand over the blonde’s  ,  &  leans in to kiss him without much thought behind it.

roxas’ lips are sticky  &  sweet  ,  like ice cream.  he could probably get used to the taste of sea-salt like this.

‘ y’know....this almost feels like a date. ’
