Remember Fun - Train Journeys
Tugboat - S/T
Souvenirs from Egg Records (compilation) - Various artists
Alrighty, here’s one of those three-for-the-price-one posts, with the added bonus that they’re all pretty obscure! And all three CDs made their way into my collection because a Glaswegian I randomly hung out with on the Greek island of Skyros in 2007 uttered the words “I used to play in an ‘indie’ band. We were called Remember Fun.”
He said this to me a few years after our Skyros encounter. I was telling him that I had started writing for gimmeindie.se, reviewing songs and compiling playlists for the radio broadcast the site had. And he said that in the late 80s and early 90s, he used to play bass with this band.
So I looked up Remember Fun. He said they put out a CD EP and were on a few compilations here and there. I found their EP and a compilation they’re featured on called Souvenirs from Egg Records through Spotify, then got it all on Discogs.
The compilation is excellent and also features a band called Tugboat. I can’t find much information about this band (or many other bands on the compilation), except that they’re from Toronto and some of the guys also played in a band called Change of Seasons (also on the compilation!).
This is officially the most obscure stuff I have in my collection. I can’t find much on Google and it seems that the records are only available on CD and a few 7" singles (which I also bought through Discogs!). In fact, the compilation and the Tugboat album look pretty homemade, even being classified as a CD-R on Discogs. So if you know about them, let me know!
Right. What does it all sound like? Indie! Indie pop/rock with jangly guitars like The Go-Betweens, early R.E.M. and Galaxie 500 (pretty sure Tugboat got their name from them!). If you’ve read my previous posts, you know I got a soft spot for this stuff. It’s all there on Spotify if you’re interested!
