Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith . I almost can’t believe it’s already been 15 years since Elliott Smith passed away. . Personally, his music means more to me than the work of any other artist. His albums make my top ten of all time, no matter how my taste evolves. His songs are the only ones I remember how to play on guitar. . I never got the chance to see him on stage, but to this day, I still listen to him every few days. . Went to see Beach House in full multicolored madness last night. . When I saw them 8 years ago at Debaser Slussen (RIP) after queuing for 1.5 hours in the snow, I experienced one of the best shows I’d ever seen. To this day, that gig makes my all-time top five. Easily. Top three maybe. So my expectations for last night were perhaps a bit too high. . At the end of the day, it was fine, even though the sound at Münchenbryggeriet was just awful at times. And it was like a sauna in there. . Anyway. The latest Beach House is great. Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway . My favorite record by everyone’s “favorite” asshole. I haven’t seen any news of Mark Kozelek in a while. Maybe he isn’t much of an asshole anymore. Just a grumpy old man, perhaps? I don’t know. And for the purposes of telling you about this record, it’s not that important, even though I have a REALLY hard time separating art from the artist. . For the past year or so, I’ve been trying to compile a 100-song playlist of my favorite songs from my favorite albums ever. One song per album. It’s impossible. My musical moods keep changing. I keep revising my personal music history. Favorite artists keep becoming insufferable pricks (wassup Morrissey!)... But one song that would survive these dynamic changes is “Carry Me, Ohio”, the best song on this album. The big problem is that it’s not on Spotify! Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See . The iconic album by these dream pop legends, featuring perhaps the most quintessential dream pop song, “Fade Into You”. . I LOVE Hope Sandoval’s voice, especially when she sings “faaaaade into you”. Perhaps the only singing voice imitated more often is Eddie Vedder’s, but Sandoval’s warm, airy delivery is pretty ubiquitous. Well, at least when considering my record collection. Comet Gain - Broken Record Prayers . This compilation of singles, Peel Sessions, and unreleased tracks was my first introduction to this severely underrated indie rock band from London. They had been around for nearly 20 years when this record came out, so I was pretty late to the party. But in my circle of music-loving friends, most haven’t heard of them. I feel they should at least be on the same level of fame as their US counterparts, Guided By Voices. Right? . Proto-emo double feature! Embrace & Rites of Spring - s/t . So much for a running start to my summer vacation. I got sick on the second day and am just recovering now. Tonsillitis is balls. . But what’s totally not balls is Fugazi. In fact, they’re the total opposite of this definition of balls. . And it’s been a mini-mission of mine to find the debut albums by the two bands that would break up after one LP and eventually come together as Fugazi; the two bands that directly preceded Fugazi but gave a sneak preview of a legendary future sound; I’m talking about Ian Mackaye’s Embrace and Guy Picciotto’s Rites of Spring of course. . And you know what? I didn’t give up hope of a “physical” find (as in, I didn’t just go on Discogs and order these babies home). I was patient boy! I waited I waited I waited! Then it happened, right in my own neighborhood (@petsoundsrecords)! Mission complete! . It was a glorious moment, topped by the fact I didn’t have to spend a fortune on them. No disrespect to Discogs (I happily use that marketplace), but this is one of the main reasons why I collect records. For these discovery moments, in a physical record store. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. They were BOTH there in the new arrival bins of the second hand section. Just waiting for me... . Anyway. Long story short. Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer . One of the more out-there and eclectic records I own. A psychedelic amalgam of hip hop, soul, 60s garage rock, and experimental lo-fi - all underlined with that scraggly, croaky singing voice. Distinctive is how I would describe it all in one word. And with that I really mean the opposite of straightforward. . It’s kind of a tough listen too. It’s purposely written to be a bit difficult, according to Gonjasufi himself. Most songs are produced by The Gaslamp Killer but the Flying Lotus produced song “Ancestors” is my fave. Reminds me of a lo-fi version of 90s triphop like Nightmares on Wax. . Sandy Denny - Sandy . Here’s the thing. I don’t like this record as a whole. I like Sandy Denny, her first album is sublime and her work with Fairport Convention is ace. But I just never really got into this one. . Why do I own it then? Apart from the fact that someone vandalized this cover and put a stamp on her forehead, which makes it all look vaguely satanic, Sandy also features one of the greatest folk songs of all time. It’s also one of the best Side 1, Track 1s of all time, any genre. I’m talking about “It’ll Take a Long Time”, of course. Easily worth the €10 I paid for this record at a flee market in Rotterdam that grossly overpriced their records. . Anyway, what other Side 1, Track 1s are great? (A little High Fidelity reference for you there.) Dead Boys - Younger, Louder & Snottier, The Rough Mixes . RIP Anthony Bourdain. Your excellent autobiography, Kitchen Confidential, came out when I was 20 years old, working 16-hour split shifts in one of London’s biggest hotel and banqueting kitchens. It was a 6-month internship and my first real taste of restaurant kitchen life. I worked in patisserie and garde manger without any experience in each, with a giant of a chef who was also a giant asshole. It was tough. Other cooks and chefs around me were great people though. One of them recommended your book, along with Down and Out in Paris and London. I could instantly relate to the scenes described in your book, although the on-the-job drug use in your time was decidedly heavier. We were just hooked on caffeine pills and after-work boozing. The point is, your book was a relief during an oftentimes mentally draining 6 months. . Your book also introduced me to Dead Boys and “Sonic Reducer”, one of the greatest punk anthems ever. . I hope you’ve found peace, Anthony Bourdain. And to anyone out there who feels lost and despondent, don’t give up. There are people and organizations that can help you, concretely and effectively. Holy Now - Please Call Me Back . It’s still hot as shit in Stockholm. I rode my bicycle to work today and arrived drenched in sweat. Cycling in Stockholm is an apocalyptic nightmare even without the heat, by the fucking way, but I won’t get into that nor this morning’s bout of road rage. Or should I say “bicycle-lane rage”? . Anyway, listening to this EP by Gothenburg band Holy Now won’t help me cool down, literally or figuratively. But it’s still a catchy bit of indie rock, complete with head-bobbing riffs and pained lyrics, from Sweden’s indie rock capital. (Can I say that about GBG without all the STHLMers or MLMites getting offended? Not to mention all the other indie rock bastions in this country? Ugh. It’s too hot to care right now, sorry.) . Hookworms - Microshift . It’s hot as hell in Stockholm today. I shouldn’t complain. I genuinely hated this winter. It just wouldn’t end. Now we’ve had weeks of sun and heat. And really, it’s glorious. Today is damn hot though. . You know what else is hot? This record. Yeah, you like that segue? Hot weather to hot record? Literary genius, I am. . Seriously though. When this record came out in February, my immediate gut reaction was to claim it as record of the year. Three months later it definitely remains one of the main contenders. . Psychedelic krautrock with warm, enveloping synths and chugging guitar riffs and melodies. Love “Static Resistance”, “Ullswater” and “Shortcomings”. Also love MJ the singer’s voice on this one. FKA Twigs - LP1 . I love when a record I had been meaning to buy when it first came out (but for some reason skipped) shows up in the second hand section of my local record store. And at a very reasonable price too. . Long time followers know I loves me some experimental, alternative, left-field pop. FKA Twigs adds exactly the right amount of the peculiar to defy genre boundaries and make the listener explore beyond ubiquitous, mainstream pop conventions. But she stays entirely accessible for the mainstream, I feel.
