Moderated Remote Testing
It’s interesting to see how the landscape of remote usability testing continues to grow. A lot of the tools discussed this week have been significantly refined since I last evaluated them. Loop11 seems to be relative stable but the licensing cost can be relatively high for some. One of the posts from this week really caught my attention: “Six Benefits of Remote Usability”. When I think of remote testing for some reason I directly think of self-guided/un-moderated tools but it doesn’t have to be that way.
It’s easy to forget how far simple connectivity tools have come. Tools such as Skype, Go-To-Meeting or Blue Jeans are relatively bug free and allow you to view what participants are doing remotely clearly. I’ve been using Blue Jeans in the past few months for connecting to remote meetings with a lot of success and I’m excited to try it out as a remote testing tool in the near future. The biggest challenge I encounter in recruiting is paying users enough to participate. Tools such as Mechanical Turk are building a marketplace for testing that may in theory make it more affordable to get user feedback. In the meantime for us, it’s still no substitute for investing in usability.
