despite the lack of elise and specs/tucker... the red door is the best insidious movie since the original.
patrick wilson outdid himself. the scares were nicely done and not campy or cheesy. plus, i love that he added the realistic element of addressing all the trauma his possession caused. hell of a directorial debut for him.
plus, his song collab with ghost? perfection. loved the movie, and it's a good end to the series if they don't decide to make another later on.
A/N: Thought I would give you guys a break from the angst, thanks so much for requesting @taymour13, I hope everyone enjoys! I love you all very much! xxx
You heard a tired groan coming from the right of you in the passenger seat of the car, and you laughed as you took your eyes off the road for a second as you looked at your best friend. His eyes were tired from sleep and his hair was dishevelled from where he had been leaning against the window.
“You okay there, sleepy head?” you asked as you looked back at the road.
He stretched his arms above his head and gave you an adorable dimpled smile that you didn’t see. If you had seen it, it would have stopped your heart, “I’m good, do you want to pull over and I’ll drive?” he asked.
You shook your head, “it’s okay, I know how anxious you get driving on the highway.”
“Thanks, Y/N,” Dalton said quietly and you could hear the smile in his voice.
You were on your way to Dalton’s parents’ house, he’d invited you over for the Fall break and you wondered if this was the first time he’d brought a girl home. But, you supposed with his handsome face and sweet nature, you probably weren’t the first. That thought made a slightly sick feeling blossom in your stomach, but you ignored it. Dalton wasn’t your boyfriend, no matter how much you wanted him to be.
A couple of hours later, you pulled up outside a cute little house with a swing set in the big front yard. You watched in silence as Dalton grabbed your suitcase from the trunk of your car and you were almost hypnotised as you watched his muscles strain beneath his shirt.
“You okay, Y/N?” he asked.
Your eyes snapped back to his face, “uh yeah, I’m all good,” you smiled, it was going to be so hard trying to not let your feelings show.
He nodded and headed up the path to the house, with you following behind him closely. He knocked on the door and a couple of seconds later the door was pulled open and his parents grinned at the both of you. His dad pulled Dalton into a hug while his mom did the same to you.
“Hey, I’m Renai,” she grins as she pulls away.
You smile back, “I’m Y/N, thank you so much for having me.”
“No worries at all! I’m glad that Dalton finally brought a girl home.”
Dalton groaned, “mom!” he flushed as she kissed his cheek.
“Hi, I’m Josh,” the older man smiled and you waved shyly, he was hot.
“Y/N.”
As Dalton’s parents ushered you into the house, you glanced at Dalton and spoke quietly so his parents wouldn’t hear, “your dad is a dilf,” you laughed as Dalton gave you the most disgusted look you’d ever seen.
“You are vile.”
Renai smiled as she turned to look at you, “I’ve set up the spare room, will that be okay honey?”
You smiled at their kindness, but you shouldn’t be surprised by how welcoming they were, “that’s perfect, thank you so much.”
Dalton grinned as he nudged his shoulder against yours, “c’mon, I’ll show you were it is.”
“Keep the door open, Dalton,” Josh shouted after you both as you walked up the stairs, you could hear the laughter in Josh’s voice and you could tell that he was intentionally trying to embarrass his son.
“Jesus, dad!” he shouted back and you laughed as the tips of his ears turned red.
The room was so cute, it had a window seat that over looked the back yard and there was a selection of books on the bedside table. Dalton placed your suitcase on the bed and flushed, running a hand through his hair as you picked up a book.
“I told my mom that you liked to read, didn’t realise she was gonna buy the whole stock of Barnes and Noble.”
You smile up at him, “it’s sweet,” you flushed as you realised what he said, “you talk about me?”
Dalton’s lips parted but before he could answer, a voice from the doorway spoke up, “he never shuts up about you, Y/N,” a boy a little younger than Dalton was standing there with headphones around his neck and a smirk on his face.
There was a small girl standing at his side who giggled, covering her mouth, “Dalton’s right though, Y/N, you’re really pretty.”
Dalton groaned in frustration, it was like his whole family were out to get him, “these two nuisances are Foster and Callie,” he introduced you and you grinned at his siblings.
“I think nuisances is a bit harsh. I like them already,” you laugh.
The following day, the weather was extremely warm for the middle of October, so the Lamberts decided to have an impromptu BBQ. Dalton grinned at you as he glanced up at you from where he was sketching as you sat next to him. He let you rest your head against his shoulder as you watched him draw.
Foster snickered as he walked over to the both of you, “you never let me look at your art, bro.”
Dalton spoke up, his eyes never leaving the paper he was drawing on, “because I actually like Y/N.”
You and Foster exchanged a look, ever since you’d arrived at his parent’s house he’d been hinting that he had more than friendly feelings for you. Though, you didn’t want to get your hopes. Foster gave his older brother an incredulous look before he shook his head and walked away.
You smothered a laugh as you picked up your empty glass and nodded over at Dalton’s “want a refill?”
Dalton finally paused in his sketching to look up at you and he gave you a dimpled smile, “sure, thanks Y/N.”
Josh was in the kitchen as you poured your drinks, “hey want some ice?” he asked as he offered you the ice tray.
“Sure,” you smiled as you put some ice in your drink, “none for Dalton though, he hates it when he gets his drink watered down.”
Josh looked up at you in surprise, raising an eyebrow, “you know that about him?”
You nodded, aware of how hot your cheeks were getting.
“You like him don’t you? You like him more than a friend.”
You sigh and look at Josh, “yeah but I don’t want to ruin anything, I would rather have him as a friend than not at all.”
Josh smiled at you, “he likes you too, I can tell. You guys would look good together.”
You grinned up at him before heading back outside and you found Dalton staring into space, “hey, you okay?” you asked as you gave him his drink.
“Do you think I’m weird?”
“Whoa, where did that come from? Dalton of course I don’t,” you sat back down and laced your fingers through his.
He smiled at you as he gave your hand a squeeze, “thank you.”
“What for?”
He shrugged, his hand raking through his hair, “I can be me around you. I don’t have to pretend with you.”
You smile and take a deep breath, “Dalton, I like everything about you, I like the way you refuse to have ice in your drink, I like the way you cut the crusts off your sandwiches like a little kid and the way you get stressed when you drive on the highway. I like you, Dalton. More than just a best friend.”
Dalton grinned as his cheeks flushed as he leaned over and cupped your cheek, his warm breath blowing across your face, “I like you too,” he brushed his thumb against your bottom lip, “can I kiss you?” when you nod he leans in and presses his lips against yours in a soft kiss.
His family watch the interaction from the doorway and they all breathe a sigh of relief, “at least we don’t have to watch them obliviously pine for each other all week,” Foster snickered.
- You and Josh have been friends since you were kids, just before you both started school
- Your mom became friends with Lorraine when she noticed she too was a single parent
- He was very hesitant to let you in even though you’ve known each other for years as you two started growing up (around age seven, he became more aware of his gift and you wanting to be friends)
- Lorraine never verbally said it but she was grateful for you (along with Elise)
- You were there when he showed himself the way out
- It took you a bit before you pieced it together but eventually you did and did all you could to help
- Your mom gave any insight she could to help, she too experienced this and found herself calling for Carl’s help just before you were born
- You helped Josh when things got tough after
- You begged them to let you tell him, but Lorraine and your mother said no every time
- Then came your internal battle, his demons may have been put on hold but that didn’t mean you were protected
- A whole summer when you two were fifteen was the first time you spent a part, unfortunately, for the better
- You came back into his life, and it felt like you were a new person
- Fast forward to college, he meets his new favorite girl as he teasingly told you when he came back to the dorm late one night
- You were not upset by any means, although you did wish Renai had a cute sister because she’s not bad looking (something you told him when he asked if you knew her)
- Before they got married, you were always the voice of reason giving them the others perspective
- You were aware of being the third wheel because you'd often make yourself scarce before they realized they needed time to themselves
- Renai loved you the more you guys talked and never felt threatened by you or about her and Josh’s relationship
- When they announced they were getting married and pregnant, you were always willing to help around the house and (in the future) with the kids since you were around so often
- Of course, you were their aunt and godmother (to all kids)
- The first few years of their marriage, you weren't around as often, letting them settle into this new stage of their lives, giving you more opportunities to meet your girlfriend
- She wasn’t a fan of the kids or how close you were to the couple and you two broke up
- After that you kind of became the kids go to babysitter (even though all of them consider you their other mother)
- They loved you so much and always included you in their hobbies or drawings
- Your mom and Lorraine teased about you being a third parent to the kids to which you’d tell them it was because no one wanted to procreate with you (they’d point out Dalton who’d just called you mama or mom two to further plead their case)
- You were with Dalton when he first interacted with the demon
You grabbed his arm and kept him close when the door to the attic opened. "We're not going in there."
"The doors open."
"That's not an invitation. That is something asking to harm you."
"But what if it's something nice?"
"Let's not take that chance and go back down where your parents are."
He stands up, pushing you off him. "I'm going with or without you."
You try to grab him but fail as he runs past you. "Why are kids so terrible at listening?"
You follow him, barely in time for him to fall and run towards him only for him to start screaming.
- The couple was disappointed with you but never verbally told you
- You could tell though and not just because of your thoughts haunting you
- You slowly started to push yourself away from the family and they didn’t notice until Lorraine pointed it out
- Things got worse from there, your mother passed, and no one had a clue
- At least until Carl got a call from Elise
- They had to call Elise who then reached out to you
- You knock on the door and are greeted by his mother
"It's been too long," she pulls you in for a hug. "I'm sorry we have to meet again because of this."
“I don’t know why I’m here,” you tell her.
“You know why.”
“What’s happened?”
“She never left and Dalton- my poor baby-”
You furrow your brows, “what’s happened? I thought Dalton was, okay?”
“A lot has happened since you were here.”
You scoff, “no kidding.”
- The sight of Elise brings you to a pause, sending a chill down your spin.
- You still don’t know what happened that night but don’t have any regrets about helping them
- You just wish you didn’t have to go back
- Renai pulls you to the side, making sure you’re okay and can do this
- Then Lorraine came over to check in on you because she knows what’s gone on with you when Josh was a kid
- No one knew you also had gained something being as close with your best friend as you did, you were lucky to have help when it came to controlling it
- It wasn’t easy, but you all found a way out and moved past this for a bit, until Lorraine passed, and it was time for Dalton to go off to college and it feels like the whole thing started over again
ok but in insidious renai goes “i just want things to be different here i’m scared nothing will change” & all that & josh goes “it will i promise” etc etc before dalton’s coma. like? they never officially elaborate on What the problem is? it’s implied but 😭
Imma need some good writers to write Josh Lambert x reader fics because the lack of them is deeply upsetting and I need to be satisfied with anything doesn’t matter if it’s fluff or smut or both idc just NEEEDDD josh lambert x reader in my life!
And a couple specs/tucker x reader wouldn’t hurt either to be fair
