Renaissance Humanism, is one of the various humanist ideologies which was prevalent from 14th to 16th centuries in Europe (mostly Italy). The members of this humanist movement were heavily influenced from the teachings and the philosophies of the Ancient Greeks. Their inspiration from the antiquity made them gain a new spirit of learning which was independent from the teachings and the norms of the Catholic Church. Renaissance Humanists focused on answering the questions regarding the life by applying to logic and science. They were also known to make a great deal of art work which continue fascinating the viewers in our present-day. The biggest inspiration for their art work had come from ancient Romans and Greeks. These people were fascinated by the monuments which were left from antiquity and they aimed to produce new art works and monuments such as these.
The fresco painting above is one of the best pieces of arts that demonstrate the classical spirit of the Renaissance humanist movement. This fresco is named The School of Athens, and it was made by the famous painter Raphael in the early 16th century. This art is significant since each of the individual in the painting were the famous thinkers from the Ancient Greece. The great philosophers such as Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato are all present in the fresco. This is a perfect example that shows how the Renaissance artists were thinking highly of the Greek philosophers.
There are many other famous individuals who were part of the Renaissance humanist movement with their philosophical thoughts and their art works. Leonardo da Vinci was one of the most famous of them. He is regarded as a Renaissance man, since he was artist, inventor, and a philosophical thinker at the same time. His great art works are still very popular throughout the World. Another Renaissance artist that achieved profound fame is Michelangelo. He was a master sculpturists whose works are still viewed with astonishment in our present-day.
The Renaissance humanist movement also produced a lot of new philosophical thoughts. One of the most famous one of these would be political realist ideology. Originated by Niccolo Machiavelli, this school of thought instructed the rulers of states to govern without obeying the traditional principles of morality or Church teachings. Instead it advised the state rulers to govern and do whatever it is necessary to preserve the power of their government. Machiavelli mentioned his ideas in The Prince, which created a great controversy across Europe.
