What I love about Renar’s story story is that when he is committed he is merely a foolish boy… testing some boundaries, but generally a jovial young man who simply likes blue jeans and rock music.
It isn’t until he’s committed that he becomes potentially dangerous.
They unintentionally sharpen him into something else- into daggerous guarded looks and calculating brief speech. He used to be gawky laughs and uncoordinated elbows. Now he is steeled anger, determination, and glares.
At the end when he is dragged back I see someone who has been sharpened and winnowed down from what he used to be, all soft and amiable parts gone.
