mirror theory
so we’ve seen how mirrors play a part in the symbolism of the oa, and that got me thinking about how the crestwood five mirror the original five so we’re gonna break down each of those because here at www dot buckme dot tumblr dot com, we occasionally contribute to the fandom
with that, let’s get into it!
french is homer’s parallel. i mean there’s pretty obvious things pointing to this such as: the mirror part, both of them trying to make things “right”, the fact that both of them are framed around college and academia (especially with sports “families” that they leave behind) etc. both of them provide stability to a wild arrangement of people with their own struggles. they do not want to give up, and are sometimes idealists to deal with their realities (see: homers rant on gardening; french’s “my name is alphonso and i’m going to make this right” declaration to nancy and abel.) they are calm and collected when those around them aren’t.
steve is scott’s. angry and rebellious, not wanting to fit to anyone’s system (often with disasterous outcomes, such as asheville for steve or scott’s capital D Death) until they see and believe in something and then both are loyal and strong. each are resentful, because they have only been betrayed or hurt. both want a way out (see: the whole reason scott starts to help is because he sees the light at the end of the tunnel, pun intended; steve yelling “oa! take me with you!”) they use anger and sarcasm to cover how much they hurt, violent words and sometimes actions to hide pain. they are strong in the way broken glass is used as a weapon: once fragile, but now they are the cause of pain.
bba is renatta’s. i know, i know, personality wise the quiet, homebody betty doesn’t line up with flirtatious, vibrant renatta but hear me out: both have experienced great loss. bba with her brother, and renatta, in her old life. we don’t hear much about renattas old life except for in a snippet of conversation she has with hap where she says something along the lines of “i don’t want attention for what happened to me i want to move on and forget”. both she and bba feel this way. and when it gets down to it, both have a fire, a fight, in their bones. see bba’s rescue of steve from asheville; see renatta’s refusal of hap before she’s lured in. both don’t really want part in what they’re given, but they quickly become soldiers for the cause. they are in pain, but they move past it for others.
jesse is rachel’s. i know i joked about this before, but we don’t see a lot of them other than in their relationships with their siblings. both are quiet and carry a melancholy air to them. and both believe oa with their whole beings. they are faithful and determined to help, even if they don’t know how. they are hopeful, but quietly.
and finally, buck is oa’s mirror. both of them listen in ways no one else does. both listen so intensely because they have to to survive. buck is quiet, sure, but he’s always listening and paying attention, just like oa does. also, neither of them feel like they fit directly in, and in a sense they’re right. also, both both dislike their home families, choosing instead to focus on their found families. finally, both will fight for what they believe in, especially their found families.
tl;dr: i have too many feelings about symbolism.
