Yanderes realizing their MC is just as fucking insane as they are: Part 1 - Ren Edition
With the amount of cameras bitch boy has around your apartment, I think he'd notice your fun little tendencies a little quicker than the others. At first, it was little things: getting snippy with the barista after she had her grubby little fingers far too close to Ren for your liking, or the way you'd glower over your laptop for hours on end after the date. Ren had access to everything in your apartment, of course, so maybe he knew your course of action before you did. And therefore, wasn't all that surprised when the girl's face popped up on the news later that week, suspected missing. In fact, he was ecstatic. His Angel was just as bat shit crazy for him as he was about them. God, could you get any cuter?!
He may have egged on the next one, he could admit that, but he really wanted to see how far you'd go, maybe even see it with his own eyes. So, maybeeeeee, he let the girl at the park fawn over his hair a bit too long. He hated every second of it, but could you blame him?! That murderous look in your eye was to die for! You almost sent him to his knees then and there, ready to propose again.
He followed this time. You looked adorable in your little get up, all dressed in black and gorgeously prepared to end the night in blood. He would've interrupted your beautiful work if he hadn't see the look of pure joy on your face. Dammit, he wanted to kiss you!! It's not fair! He decided to wait a bit, surprise you. He waited until you got rid of the body (and you were so pretty when you did, knowing exactly what you were doing), waited for you to bundle up your tools and clothes, waited for you to stalk back home like a little mouse, waited for you to realize he wasn’t in bed.
And then he showed you just how much he loved you.

Summary: Ren only had to manipulate his way into going on a lunch date with his Angel, but then they point out his roots don't look so right and suddenly his confidence falls apart.
(Ren is delusional here, Angel is not buying his BS.)

Ren stared down at the box in his hands as his head tingled with chemical burn. The bleach had been left on for a while, but he had to make sure this time it was exactly long enough. Topping up his roots was a chore, and one that he had let himself get sloppy with recently. So much so that Angel themselves had pointed out a slightly brassier tone of pink in his hair recently.
He had let himself get all flustered, the last time he had seen them. He’d ridden his motorbike to the library on a particularly windy day when traffic had been bad. The lost time meant he knew he might miss his Angel’s lunch break, and he needed that time today- Angel had been acting a little too busy for him lately. Acting dismissive. After mulling over what he could have possibly not done right, where the imperfection lay, Ren suddenly had an idea. Angel wanted him to chase them. So, Ren needed to put more effort in. ‘Stop by’ the library, conveniently at Angel’s break time and offer to take them out to a nearby café. His treat for their time. And even if they refused Ren knew he could use the awful weather to his advantage after all, as Angel would surely not turn away perfect Ren into the windy chaos outside if he feigned a little light-headedness.
The second plan worked. Having arrived, breathless, messy, and disorganized at the library exactly as Angel was about to take their lunch, he played his story. Having conveniently dropped by at the exact moment Angel might want to join him for a bite, but the bait did not work. No. Much to his ire they gave a tight smile and excused themselves about some new rule their manager had enforced, about how “all staff need to stay on site during their breaks”. But it was a lie, Ren knew that. Otherwise, why did Angel’s bothersome coworker Elanor pass Ren on his way inside, purse in hand obviously on her way to the other local coffee shop, the one she always went to and that Angel did not like?
Ren had to put on some charm. And a little manipulation.
“I’m sorry Angel… I just feel so faint after that drive the wind-“ He staggered about a bit before collapsing on a nearby bench near the reception. There was hesitation on Angel’s part for a second, before they bent down and checked Ren’s forehead with their palm.
“Should I get first aid?”
Ren shook his head before taking Angel’s hand from his forehead into his and intertwining their fingers. “S’okay.” He smiled, “I’ll be fine. I think I just haven’t eaten enough today. Do you mind if I rest here for a moment then I’ll be on my way.”
“It’s okay.” Angel sighed, “Hang on here, let me get you a drink.” Pulling their hand away from his, they left Ren to sit all on his own. He peered around the library which was mostly empty except for the odd coworker of Angel’s as well as a familiar patron Ren had noticed before. But none of them much a threat. By now Ren was confident he had a solid grip on all your relationships. He had you all to himself right now, so he had to use the time given wisely.
Ren stretched his back and sat up straight taking a deep breath in. It was nice. The idea of Angel personally getting him something to make him feel better. It was so sweet. Even if he knew they wanted to be chased (why else would they lie about not being able to leave the building) it was good feeling like Angel wanted him to stay. Maybe this was all their own planning, to keep him to themselves in the comfort of the library without worrying of running into one of their annoying friends (which was happening too much lately).
Seriously, Ren thought. The last three times he had been out with Angel they had ran into someone they knew. If not their frustratingly protective friend Leon, then their loathsome acquaintance Teo or their even more protective neighbour Violet. It seemed like Angel’s friends just always had to be around. It was beginning to make Ren resentful. He wanted to be the only one to adore them.
Angel finally returned with a bottle of iced tea as well as a plastic Tupperware box.
“We have an old vending machine in the staffroom. Conan keeps it stocked up with drinks for just us.” They said, “Conan is my-“
“Your manager.” Ren smiled taking the bottle gently from Angel’s hand. “Thanks, by the way.”
Angel gave a strange look at Ren before sitting down next to him on the other side of the bench, “Yeah, anyway I figured we could share my lunch, have half a sandwich each. It’s not much but I’d feel better knowing you’re out on that bike again having eaten something.”
Ren blushed, his Angel, that concerned for him?
“Oh, I couldn’t.” He said in his perfectly practiced sweet and sickly Haruko tone. “That’s your lunch, you shouldn’t go hungry because of me.” Ren shook his head and held his hand to stop Angel form pushing half a brown bread cheese sandwich his way.
“Ren,” they sighed, “you’ve come all this way. Just take the sandwich or I’ll feel bad.”
His ears grew hot, “Why.” He asked avoiding sounding too interested, “Why should you feel bad I mean,” he said, “I should have eaten something earlier. I’m sorry I’m robbing you of your lunch break right now.”
“No… It’s not that.” They said, taking a bite of one of the sandwich halves. “I just mean I- food is best shared with friends.” They said, “and you wanted to get lunch with me, and I feel bad that we can’t”.
“Well,” Ren said turning away from looking at Angel, “That’s not your fault. Is it?”
As soon as he said it he realised his mistake, his voice had come off a little cooler than he had meant it. What was wrong with him? Quick, diffuse the sudden tension-
“I just don’t want to see someone go hungry when I have food to share.” Angel cut in before Ren had a chance to turn the conversation his way. “And I’ll be okay. Conan won’t let me go hungry and I won’t let you either.”
From the corner of his eye Ren noticed them turn towards him and smile that unmistakable kind-hearted smile of theirs, a smile he knew they reserved only for those closest to them. But when he turned to meet them, he noticed the corners of their mouth had gone down a little. Their eyes seemed dimmer; expression flatter.
Had he offended her with his comment? Did he sound accusing?
Angel, silently, offered the other half of their sandwich to him once again. Ren knew he had to take it. There was no choice. The thanked Angel before taking a bite.
“Can I make up stealing your lunch by taking you out to dinner tonight? After your shift?” He asked.
“Thanks, but I’m meeting Leon tonight.” Angel said between the last few mouthfuls of their sandwich.
“Oh, some other time then.”
Having finished their food Angel sat and waited for Ren in silence, with nothing to say. However Ren did his best to eat in a controlled manner, but he was panicking inside. Why was there awkwardness on Angel's part? He finished eating and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
“Has it been busy today?” He asked before taking another sip of the drink Angel gifted him. Angel shook their head.
“Not particularly. What about you, you get up to much in your free time Ren?”
Ren nodded, “I have some chores here and there.” He smiled trying to sound interesting. “Washing to do, I also need to buy a new pair of shoes and tidy up my hair.” He said in an offhand way. Angel perked up suddenly engaged.
“I’ve always figured you dye your own hair, right? You cut it too?”
“Yeah.”
“That’s a lot to do.” They said, “I guess you must also have to re-dye it too?”
“Huh? What do you mean.” Ren asked, he had only re-done his roots a week ago.
Angel suddenly looked embarrassed, “Oh I’m sorry. I just figured you’d touch up the brassiness in the roots. When I used to do my hair, I could never stand when the roots were different to the rest of the head.”
“Does the colour not match?” Ren asked panicked.
“Huh? No- Well its not that bad” Angel suddenly said. “I’m sorry Ren I shouldn’t have pointed it out that was rude of me.”
Ren sighed. This had not gone his way. When did he loose control over the conversation. When did he not notice if his perfectly cultivated style was wrong. Perhaps he had gotten too comfortable.
“Its fine. Thanks for letting me know though. I guess I did rush my last top up job. Maybe one day you could help me out and do my roots for me if you have a lot of experience?” He asked sweetly.
“Maybe.” Angel replied. “If you’d like.” Ren gave them a convincingly warm but controlled smile as Angel fumbled with the empty Tupperware box on their lap. “Well,” they said, “it was nice to see you Ren. I need to do some things on my break before I get back to work. But you stay here as long as you need.”
“Oh… right, have a good rest of your shift.” He said as Angel stood up and waved. “Thanks again, see you around!” He called after them as they left. He sat there for a moment, watching them head around a corner into the library staffroom.
Ren eventually stood up and left the Library, tossing an empty iced tea bottle in the bin on his way out. Getting his bike and heading back to his apartment to watch you on the library surveillance he’d hacked into. As he entered his minimalist apartment, he passed by a mirror he had in the entryway and stared long at his candyfloss pink hair. The roots were a more peachy shade compared to the ends. How had he not noticed?
He waited until a few days later to dye his hair again. He needed time to mull over how to get Angel to go out with him again. Maybe he wasn’t chasing them enough? Or maybe his crafted Haruko persona was not good enough. Perhaps Angel has done him a kindness, they had made him aware his hair color was wrong so he could fix it and be perfect for them. The thought made him relieved; his Angel just wanted him to be perfect. So, he’d try again. And the next time he saw them, Ren would be perfect, he’d refresh Angel with a display of their exact dream fantasy. He’d be everything. And he’d start by making sure his hair was the exact shade of pink they expected.
When that day at the Library had ended, Angel had finished late. They grabbed their things from the staffroom and then turned off the light as they left, done with their shift for the day. Checking their phone, they confirmed that Leon was waiting outside for them. But just as they made their way to the entrance, they passed Conan doing his closing check of the building.
“Everything okay today?” He asked them. Angel nodded. “Are you going to be safe leaving here on your own?”
“Yes, thank you, Leon’s outside.”
Conan gave an uncertain look, before nodding in approval. “Stay safe.”
Angel waved goodbye as they spotted Leon, holding two coffee cups, through the library glass doors.
“Hey.” They said, glad to see their childhood best friend. Leons smiled back, offering a steaming hot drink from Angel’s favourite coffee place. “I needed this thank you.”
“No worries, did my idea work?” He asked curiously.
Angel nodded, “I lied, and he seemed to back off, but he hung around and I still ended up having lunch with him. I should have hid in the staffroom.”
“You should tell Conan. He could kick the guy out.” Leon protested as the pair headed out towards the bay. The unruly wind from earlier had died down and there was a small amount of late afternoon sun breaking through the clouds above.
“He’s not done anything wrong; we can’t just ban him from the library.” Angel sighed, “And besides I don’t want to make Conan worry. He’s my manager I have to be professional. But…” They said with a sadness creeping into their throat, as they peered at the coffee cup in their hand. Taking a sip, they sighed again. “I don’t think I can go to Driftwood anymore if there is a chance of running into Ren. Guess I’ll have to start going to Elanor’s favourite place.” Angel screwed up their face making Leon laugh.
“It can’t be that bad.” He said.
“Have you been?” Angel asks pouting, “The coffee is so weak it’s like drinking mostly frothed milk.”
Leon laughed clutching his own coffee cup tightly as Angel rolled their eyes.
“Okay, I’ll just bring you your coffee from now on? How does that sound? Then you won’t have to worry about running into Ren.”
Angel looked up with surprise, “You’d do that for me Leon?” Really?”
“Really ‘Darl.” He said. “Coffee dates on me only from now on.”
“Thanks Leon.” Angel said giving a heartwarming and open smile his way.
