Kakinada green ammonia project India: Legacy fertilizer assets face a renewable reliability test
Green ammonia project India is entering a decisive phase as AM Green Ammonia (India) Pvt. Ltd. plans to modernize the former Nagarjuna Fertilizers complex at Kakinada instead of developing an entirely new manufacturing facility. The Rs 12,199 crore investment combines a new 128,000 Nm³/hour green hydrogen plant with modifications to the existing ammonia unit, allowing green and conventional ammonia production to operate within the same industrial complex. Rather than focusing only on electrolyser capacity, the project places equal importance on integrating legacy process infrastructure with renewable hydrogen systems, making it one of India's most significant industrial decarbonization initiatives.
Unlike a conventional greenfield project, Green ammonia project India depends heavily on upgrading existing compressors, synthesis systems, refrigeration equipment and process controls originally designed for natural gas-based operations. Indian Petroplus analysis indicates that the primary challenge lies not in hydrogen production alone but in maintaining reliable integration between renewable-powered electrolysers and ageing ammonia infrastructure. The project also requires around 703 MW of electricity sourced through renewable energy arrangements, while simultaneously maintaining operational reliability and production efficiency across the modified facility.
The proposal highlights how India's clean-energy transition is increasingly being driven by modernization of existing industrial assets rather than entirely new manufacturing complexes. If successful, the Kakinada model could encourage fertilizer, refinery and petrochemical companies to adopt similar brownfield decarbonization strategies.
