Few nights ago it dawned on me that once I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, I really did change. Yet, something was holding me back. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't experience the fullness of His awesome will in my life. Why? I was still thinking like the "old Salote". I compromised sin to make others feel comfortable being around me. I had the "it's ok if you do it as long as you don't drag me into it" mentality. I claimed to stand for God's Word while falling into man's world. I conformed myself to think how this world wanted me to think, instead of how God wanted me to think. The Bible clearly says in Romans 12:2," do not be conformed to the ways of this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your minds," and that was the very thing that had me. I was conformed to the ways of this world and barely even trying to renew my mind. I knew that if I had changed my mindset, I wouldn't be able to use worldly reasoning to justify others' sins, but my own sins as well. The other big misconception I had was that I was the "same Salote", just this time, I was the "same saved Salote". See, being saved didn't mean that I was washed with Jesus' blood or that I was cleansed with the Word, it was just a label to me. I didn't view myself as new or special, but as simply the same, this time though, I was "saved". That all changed when I came across the verse in Corinthians that reads, "and if anyone is in Christ, he is a NEW creation, old things have passed; and ALL things are made new," and that blew me out of the water. Was I new? Was my mind renewed? I started to realize that my mind couldn't be "on the fence" about sin. Either I was in God's yard or the devil's yard. I knew the Holy Spirit was convicting my spirit, soul, and mind. It's kind of like when you go to class without your homework and the whole time before that class your mind is coming up with excuses and you have two options: skip class or face the teacher. In my case? I was tired of skipping class because I knew that my Teacher, my Heavenly Father, wanted to help me out. So I have let the Teacher of all teachers help me, and how exactly did I renew myself? Well, I started reading the Bible, praying, and fasting. I stopped listening to music I had once enjoyed (you know, the ones that glamorize sex, alcohol, partying, drugs, and violence), I stopped entertaining my thirst for attention from guys, I stopped longing for the things of this world, I basically stopped with the guilty pleasures because at the end of it all, that's exactly what I was, guilty. But don't misinterpret what I am saying here. I am FAR from perfect and I don't claim to be at all, but I have learned one very important thing. Once you start to renew yourself each and everyday, the pleasures of this world become tasteless and even boring. You start to automatically remove yourself from places you shouldn't be, conversations you shouldn't be a part of, and relationships you shouldn't be in. Once you experience His awesome will, nothing can ever compare to it.
So just to leave you with something to think about, when are you going to start to renew yourself? Today? Tomorrow? Next month? Next year? When you're older? Remember that tomorrow is promised to no man, just start right now. Speak renewal of the mind, body, soul, and spirit into your life! Claim that you are a new creation in Jesus' mighty name! Ask the Lord to bind the strong man and loose the stronghold! Claim clarity, discernment, and Godly wisdom over yourself! To leave you with another thought, remember that," Whomever the Son sets free, is free indeed!"
