“SPACE BETWEEN THE EARS”

Peruvian-born Talavera-Ballón captures the lives and surroundings of the diverse people of the Americas and his art is offered as “a tribute to immigrants like himself who left their home countries in search of new horizons.” Self-taught Joshua Coffy grew up in a variety of locales across the US, shaping his view of the world and inspiring the varied styles and medium of his paintings of the natural world. His work often takes the shape of a light-hearted look at the animal world and how humans see and interact with them. Taking different journeys Talavera-Ballón and Coffy both ended up living and working in San Francisco, and in 2017 the two joined forces for Art Spot Reno to paint “Space Between the Ears” on Virginia St across from the El Dorado casino.  @talavera.ballon/  @giftprolific/  @artspotreno/

“THE PEOPLE MAKE THE BULL”

When he left Brooklyn a few years ago to relocate in Reno, the self-proclaimed “Biggest Little City,” Erik Burke, aka OverUnder, also launched his own artist residency program: the Big Little Residency, “focused on social practices through public works.” In 2013 Baltimore artist David Cogdill, aka Nanook, spent some residency time with Burke and among the several wheat pastes, paintings, and installations he created was this wall on the back of Martin St wine and beer retailer, Craft.  @nanookoso/  @craftreno/

“REFLECTING ON OUR IMPRESSIONS”

Painted in 2018 on the back of a parking structure adjacent to Living Stones Church ( @LS_Church ) on S Virginia St, Erik Burke, aka OverUnder, aka @OU35, says this wall is where midtown transitions into downtown. Created for the annual Midtown Art Walk, in part hosted and sponsored by  @LS_Church, the mural celebrates the 10th anniversary of the festival, with each segment representing one year. Additionally, Burke says the wall is full of rich symbolism, including images of 10 common fruit trees in the area (Apricot, Apple, Asian pear, Pear, Sour Cherry, Plum, Peach, Cherry, Nectarine, and Crabapple); the shape reflecting a to-scale representation of the new Virginia Street Bridge; a central dandelion representing the growing economic disparity within local residents; and (hope you can see it better than I) a subtle fingerprint overlaid across the wall that Burke sees as a nod to the fingerprint in “The Creation of Adam” in the Sistine Chapel. @ou35/

“CAMOUFLAGE”

Reflecting a deep interest in storytelling, and belief in the narrative power of art, Erik Burke, aka OverUnder or simply OU, creates location-specific murals throughout the world—exploring the people and history of the places he’s been fortunate enough to visit. At home in Reno, Nevada—enjoying time with family in a city with no mosquitos—Burke’s varied stories of the history and culture of the city are abundant. While Burke says most of his recent work has been far simpler, he enjoyed pushing him comfort zone with this complex tale told on the side of Reno Vulcanizing Works at Virginia and E 6th Streets. Labeled “look to the pasture to see the future” the work for Reno Mural Expo includes references to the history of Basque sheepherders in Northern Nevada as well as wheels and horse-power as a nod to the location on one of Reno’s largest auto shops.  @ou35/  @artspotreno/

“NEVADA ROW”

Born in Iowa in 1870, Jeanne Elizabeth Wier was hired to teach history at the University of Nevada in Reno in 1899. Best known for her work outside the university however, Wier was active in Nevada’s suffrage movement and then in 1904 she helped found the Nevada Historical Society and served as its director until she died in 1950. In 2016 medical cannabis retailer Blüm sponsored a mural for @MTArtWalk at the Center St RTC station, celebrating people who made had a significant impact on Nevada “through unconventional ways.” Collaborating on the 250’ wall, Erik Burke and Joe Rock painted a series of portraits, using blue—the color of the Nevada flag—for Nevada natives and contrasting warm tones for those exerting outside influence on the state. Portraits from left to right are Frederic Delongchamps, Dot So La Lee, Wovoka, Ben Palmer, Michael Heizer, Jeanne Wier (detailed), Abraham Lincoln, Jack Johnson, Sarah Winnemucca, and Mark Twain.  @letsblum  @ou35  @joecrock13
