DIY roofing for New Roofs and Roof Replacements | Gazebo Roof
Asphalt roof shingles are a great DIY roofing option for new roofs and roof replacements. The roof installation methods are fairly easy and the finished product is well worth the effort. As a roof replacement option asphalt shingles provide a long lasting and crisp and clean roof style.
Thatch gazebo roofs are very popular in Australia, however, they have a very limited life (usually around three years). The gazebo thatch roof deteriorates quickly and the local birds love to use it for their nests. The thatch is not very waterproof and becomes more of a sun shelter than anything else. Here we are DIY re roofing an African thatch gazebo roof for a homeowner wanting something watertight and long lasting.
The thatch roof provides an great sun hat! Ha Ha.
This roof replacement was a little tricky as the frame for the thatch gazebo roof was made of steel. We had to attach the plywood with metal brackets which was a little fiddly. We used a 17mm thick roofing plywood which let us use 19mm GAL clouts and not see any nails from below. The new asphalt shingle DIY roofing project was completed in Weatherwood three tab shingles which was still a nice colour and a little rustic like the thatch. We used an adhesive backed rubberised membrane to cover the plywood which is the best waterproofing barrier. Here is a photo of the finished product.
