Happy August, Folks!

I got a lot of things done last month so here's what you have to look forward to!

August 2: "Have you met Batman and Robin?": Kids Ask Bruce Wayne & Jason Todd Difficult Questions

“Bruce. B. B-man. You took six only children and made four of them middles, but only after three of the four had a taste of being the family baby. There is no universe in which we take that lying down, believe me.”

August 9: The Batchelor

“Our latest Bachelor is the rather famous Bruce Wayne of Gotham, CEO of Wayne Enterprises and father to six children whose main hobbies seem to be breaking the internet and publicly roasting each other. “At long last, however, despite previous failed romances, Bruce is ready to add a wife and stepmother to his family, and is doing it in traditional, dramatic Gotham fashion. He’s going to be arriving here soon to greet his guests, so while we wait, let’s get to know some of the gorgeous hopefuls coming for the chance to be Mrs. Bruce Wayne.”

August 16: As You Wish - Safe and Sound

“I guess you do have good reason to be scared.” The switch from maniacal cackles to deadly whispers sent a chill down Jason’s spine. He didn’t stop shivering. “Because killing you was such a good joke, even the cosmos wants me to tell it again.”

August 23: As You Wish - in memoriam

Tim sighed. Violence it was. Bruce leapt up with a shout as the glass shattered, already running towards Tim. Tim struck again, and again, enjoying the satisfying sound of the shards clattering against each other. He kicked the dummy over and began slamming the tire iron into the plaque to deface it, but then Bruce arrived, ripping the demolition tool from Tim’s hand with a cry of, “What the hell are you doing?”

August 30: repletion - ultimatum

But Bruce let his heart run in front of his head. He'd given Drake a frightening amount of power in no uncertain terms when he claimed Tim as his own.

And Drake knew it. Bruce could tell he knew it just by the man's soft, smug tone.

"Well, then," he drawled. "You sure wouldn't want me to put him in a reform school, would you?"

Well, Tim had washed everything that was actually dirty, but then he’d just opened all the cabinets so he could study as he mopped. They were already clean for fuck’s sake, so as long as he could prove he knew the locations, what Edward didn’t know wouldn’t kill him.

That answers it mostly! I was also a tad curious about characterization, too. Will that be the same, as well? In the time between the original and the rewrite you’re working on has the way you write the characters changed? It’s interesting to hear how you plan on making changes 🥰

Good question!

So "characterization" and "character arcs" are two different things.

Characterization refers to basically the character's personality. How they act and speak and make decisions, etc. For example, my characterization of Jason is that he's gruff on the outside, soft on the in, swears a lot, enjoys reading and cooking, and defends vulnerabilities with anger and humor.

A character arc is a sort of chart showing how your character experiences growth or change throughout your story. The best form of this is to show how a character believes something untrue, which drives their actions and reactions. However, as the story progresses, the character is forced to challenge and change that belief. So for example, Jason begins the story believing that Bruce values having "clean hands" more than he values making his children feel safe. But as the story goes on, this belief is challenged and ultimately changed.

So for the rewrite, my characterizations are pretty much the same, but the arcs are significantly more defined.

If I’m allowed to ask, what changes are you making for the rewrite? I didn’t get to read the original before you stopped so I’m super curious 👀 is there a big plot overhaul?

Hi! Thanks so much for asking! So if you wanted, the original is still up, and probably always will be, and you could read it right here!

To answer your question, I wouldn't call it a PLOT overhaul. The general plot and timeline will be largely the same, but I'll be filling in some of those time skips so I can SHOW more of what I told about in the story. Really my biggest single change is to the character arcs.

When I first wrote repletion, it was highly disjointed, and I was also pretty new to actually writing stories in prose form. I didn't understand how essential character arcs are, or how to write them well. So everything was just kind of happening and people were feeling things, but there really wasn't much growth or change, except abruptly towards the end. So mainly what I'm doing is going back with the knowledge of where the characters start and end, and how they change.
