#thisdayinarmyhistory #repostedfromigaccount @battlefieldtoursgron On May 3, 1945, Colonel Robert Sink was ordered to prepare the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division to leave for Berchtesgarden at 9:30 am the next day. Situated in the mountains above Berchtesgaden was Obersalzberg, a mountainside retreat where Adolf Hitler and top-level henchmen such as Martin Bormann, Albert Speer, and Herman Goering had homes. Rising roughly 3,000 feet above Hitler's Berghof home was the Eagle's Nest. On May 4, the 101st Airborne Division took off in convoy on the highway between Munich and Salzburg, with the 2nd Battalion leading the way. On May 5, the battalion, with the Easy Company in the lead, arrived in Berchtesgaden a day after 7th IR (3rd ID) who captured the town and hours after French 2nd Armoured Division had arrived. Even though the buildings in the area were largely destroyed, the men discovered well stocked pantries, still intact, that contained enormous amounts of liquor, wines, cheese, and canned foods. 📸 Picture top: HQ 2nd battalion 506 PIR after taking the Eagle's Nest, Hitler's former residence. On #WarriorWednesday we recognize U.S. Army, Sergeant Alvin York. Well known as World War I’s “greatest civilian soldier,” York was born in Pall Mall, Tennessee, in 1887. When he was drafted into military service during WWI, he attempted to claim conscientious objector status, later being denied and forced to join the Army. In 1918, York deployed to France with the 82nd Division and fought on the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. On October 8, 1918, York and his men were outnumbered by German soldiers. With his sharpshooting skills, he killed 25 enemies, and along with his troops, captured 132 German's. For his bravery, York was awarded the Distinguished Cross, which was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Charles Ketterman in a Jeep when they were ambushed in the French town of Chateaudun. York of Pall-Mall, Tennessee reportedly kills over 20 German soldiers and captures an additional 132 at the head of a small detachment in the Argonne Forest near the Meuse River in France. The exploits later earned York the Medal of Honor. York was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War 1 .After being denied conscientious-objector status, York enlisted in the 82nd Infantry Division and in May 1918 arrived in France for active duty on the Western Front. He served in the successful Saint-Mihiel offensive in September of that year. The events of October 8, 1918, took place as part of the Meuse-Argonne offensive—what was to be the final Allied push against German forces on the Western Front during World War I. York and his battalion were given the task of seizing German-held positions across a valley; after encountering difficulties, the small group of soldiers—numbering some 17 men—were fired upon by a German machine-gun nest at the top of a nearby hill. The gunners cut down nine men, including a superior officer, leaving York in charge of the squad. Several other American soldiers followed York’s lead and began firing; as they drew closer to the machine-gun nest, the German commander—thinking he had underestimated the size of the enemy squadron—surrendered his garrison of some 90 men. On the way back to the Allied lines, York and his squad took more prisoners, for a total of 132. Though Alvin York consistently played down his accomplishments of that day, he was given credit for killing more than 20 German soldiers. Promoted to the rank of sergeant, he remained on the front lines until November 1, 10 days before the armistice. #repostedfromigaccount • @armyhistory TRIVIA TUESDAY - UNIT ORGANIZATIONAL COLORS #Armyhistory #USArmy Every color bearing unit in the Army has an Organizational Flag, or Color, up to and including the U.S. Army. Today, it is carried during parades and ceremonies, and takes its place to the left of the United States Flag, the National Color. This practice is rooted in the history and traditions of the service. The unit's Organizational Color represented the pivotal point in battle around which a regiment advanced and wheeled, or rallied and reorganized. DID YOU KNOW The National and Organizational Colors were originally carried by the most junior officers in an infantry regiment, whose title of rank, "ensign," reflected that important duty. By the mid-19th century, non-commissioned officers (NCOs) assumed the honor of guarding a unit's colors with the appointment of "color sergeants." Today, NCOs maintain that responsibility - with the senior member having the honor of carrying the National Flag. The "Stars and Stripes" was not carried by Army units in the field until the mid-nineteenth century. During the Army's early history, such as during the War of 1812, the "National Color" was a blue banner emblazoned with the seal of the United States, and a buff or white banner bearing the unit's designation served as the Organizational Color. When the Stars and Stripes became the National Color for units in the field, the former blue flags became the regimental colors, modified to include the unit designation, coat of arms, and motto. The old National Color / new Organizational Color design as the basis for several state flags.
