I already have a cat! Is it safe to get a ___??
This post is directed towards cats and small animals (more specifically reptiles). I have little experience with cat/dog relationships, so I apologize if you thought that was the direction I was going in.
That being said, if you're reading this chances are you have a cat and are wanting to get another pet (or vise versa). It makes sense given how cats are the second most common pet in the world (after fish). And considering their predatory instincts, you may be worried about the safety of the new animal coming in. So the question lies. Is it safe to get a small pet if you already have a cat?
Short answer: Yes, if precautions are taken
Long answer: Stay tuned!
Step 1: This might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how some people trust their cats and how that trust is vastly misplaced. Make sure the cat is OUT of the room before you feed/handle/let out your reptiles. This is SUPER important! You don't want the cat hanging around while you're opening/closing terrariums. No matter how long. Cats are hunters and cannot be trusted around small animals. Accidents happen. Usually more often than they should. Even if you think you are watching it, if you turn your back for a few seconds it could mean a meal for your cat and the loss of your other pet(s). You also don't want to scare your smaller pets with the presence of a predatory animal. Make sure the room is safe before letting anyone out.
Step 2: Cat-proof the room as much as possible. Make sure your setup is arranged where it's difficult for a cat to see and gives it little space to jump up on. A cat won't make the attempt if it can't SEE where it's going to land. I have my terrariums pushed up to the edge of the shelf which give her no ledge to land on if she tried to hop up there. I also have most of my tanks set on a metal rack that would hurt her feet so she knows not to attempt. This doesn't stop her though, from getting as close as she can. I place sheets of aluminum foil on the floor in front of the terrariums. Cats hate the feeling of foil and won't walk on it. The foil keeps her back a few feet and negates her ability to touch the cages. I suggest doing this if your cat is going to have access to the room that your other pets are in.
My cat is very energetic and loves causing trouble where she can. Despite this, I have successfully kept reptiles with her all the same. I take tons of precautions, but I am confident anyone can have success keeping small pets while still enjoying the company of their feline companions. I hope this helps ease your mind if you are still on the fence about getting whatever pet you choose!
So cute
Hey! Since you live/lived in Illinois, would you know where I could buy a tank for a beardie that's over 45 gallons? Krogan is out growing her 45 gall and needs an upgrade asap, but everywhere I look all the tanks are 45 gallons
Petsmart regularly has nice big ones (at least the one by me) BUT there’s a place in Chicago called Curious Critters that’s a reptile specialty shop and they might be able to special order something if they don’t have a big tank in stock. Also, check Craigslist- I regularly see REALLY BIG tanks go up on CL in the Chicago area. Good luck!
Hi! I have an iPhone 6 and when I try to upload my slow-mo videos, it doesn't work and it turns it into a regular video. I wanted to ask you (if this has been asked before, I'm sorry!) how were you able to upload your slow-mo videos (specifically the one of beanbag walking)?
I import the slow motion video into Vine, and Vine seems to keep the slow motion. :3
Do you have any pictures of Harker's tank set up?
Yeah! It’s, uh, not a very good picture, though. I just snapped it and it’s- the light is bad, there’s a lot of glare, etc. So I’ll explain what everything is!
Harker right now is on orchid bark. This is a substrate that holds humidity well! He has two fake rock hides, one that is nice and large and one that isn’t but he loves it so much I can’t take it away from him. He has a big reptirock water dish, a chunk of fake driftwood from petsmart, and a load of fake plants that work great as ground cover. Most of them came from the craft store and have silk leaves. The black panel on the back is a UTH I have on there for some extra heat; most of the heat is covered by my radiant heat panel (that thing wedged in the top with the glowing red light. There’s a 48-inch LED panel up top, and capping it all is a black metal screen that’s been lined with plastic wrap to help keep humidity in the tank.
I just wanted to say that you're amazing for putting up with a lot of bs. But other than that I think you're really amazing and you do a very good job at educating people on here. I hope you have a great rest of the week and an amazing weekend!
Awwww, thanks! Really, that’s very sweet! I hope your week is just wonderful!
