It's been a while since I've read much Roman history, but Mary Beard's book came highly recommended so after giving up on Dereliction of Duty (H R McMasters rather tedious and not very well argued book) I started in on it, and have been enjoying it quite a bit. Made me long to play some Republic of Rome again. I don't know if it's a game I can actually enjoy again, or if - like Dune or Magic Realm or Titan - it's a great and classic game that simply requires too much commitment for anyone past their 20s. But it is legendary for a reason, and the combination of serious history melded with a riveting game is still unsurpassed as far as I'm concerned, one of the most artful games ever made. I'll definitely give it another try, if I can find the right group. The Valley Games version is hopelessly overproduced at times and not without fault, but nonetheless much nicer than the old Avalon Hill version. #bgg #boardgamegeek #boardgames #republicofrome #avalonhill #valleygames
