Lindsay Cooper - Rarities Volumes 1 & 2 (2014)
When I was working on my soundscape-based piece There and Back Again, I listened so often to various random recordings of urban and rural soundscapes that l knew them by heart and could anticipate every event; through repeated listening they acquired predictability, shape, contrast and an apparent sequential logic, all hallmarks of a composition.
This is an inevitable feature of repeatedly listening to recordings, and it brings into being a reactive form of composition through aesthetic listening, which is unique to, and a strong feature of, recorded media. It is also a powerful indicator of the power now invested in the listener.

The Unborn Byron - Peter Blegvad (2017)
Spread the word, tomorrow morn A future poet shall be born From my mother I shall fall Into the womb which holds us all
My life shall be a meteor Which generations shall adore For my unbuttoned liberty The unborn will remember me...
Another dynamite re-make from PB’s most recent album. Originally recorded by Slapp Happy on their Ça Va album. An amazing man heralding his own entry into the world.
Penny Black - Peter Blegvad (2017)
I can’t believe it. PB is on Bandcamp. This new record is fantastic and I don’t want to shut up about it. If you’ve never yielded to my impassioned pleas to listen to Peter, take two minutes thirty and dig this track about the first ever adhesive postage stamp.
I was a stamp collector so I knew the story well... Where stamp collectors gather It’s the one they always tell... of the stamp the lily longed for like a liar longs for truth and how it killed the lily in the flower of her youth...
This song makes stamp collecting seem way cooler that it deserves to be.
At this critical time (1948-50), common sense and all previous experience would have said that the existence of a recording inevitably implied the prior existence of some event that the recorder had miraculously trapped—even though the recording itself remained silent about the nature and origin of that event. And what could such an event possibly be, other than a performance—and an unbroken performance at that, because the recording is unbroken?
However, from the position of the technology, the thing trapped may just as well have been another recording, or recordings, or a recording with a live accompaniment, since the recording device itself simply fixes what it hears and asks no questions about origins.
By the time you reach the end of the chain there is no way to tell the difference between an event and a non-event: because a recording of a recording is still just a recording; a surface that tells nothing of its history - in the same way that a photograph of a photograph is just a photograph; a fact exploited brilliantly by photomontagists, blackmailers and politicians. In both cases the real simply vanishes into uncertainty. That is why such media, however objective they may appear, are so intrinsically untrustworthy.
As media, they are incurably fictional.
