“A heart’s a heavy burden.”

Eldon will be the last to admit that Ben’s words ring true, mouth parted expectantly; he wants to say something, just isn’t entirely sure what. He may be an expert at feeling things deeply but Ben is a veteran and Eldon just wants to help, despite his words probably doing more harm than good. It’s been a long day ( something about late-September that is tiresome ) and, even though it’s noon and he has a suspicion the sun will dip beyond the horizon a little earlier than usual, he’s content in Ben’s company for quite a while longer.
Hands tighten, fingers curled around his seat at either side. “Your hair looks nice today,” is a way of ignoring Ben’s words, just for a few seconds, at least. It looks exactly the same as it did yesterday and the day before that, and part of him is grateful that Ben allows silence to slip in soon after the comment; just enough for Eldon to think of what he’s going to say. “I’m kinda hoping you mean that in an emotional sense and not scientifically or medically,” he adds, laughing softly. “Because if your heart is heavy, you might want to see a doctor.”
