Why should you avoid the bargain basement resorts? Service. At bargain basement resorts they generally have 1 employee to 5-6 guests. In comparison luxury resorts will have 1 employee to 1-1.5 guests and premium resorts have 1 employee to 2 guests. There will LONG lines starting from check in and all through check out. On my last all inclusive trip, I was met at drop off by my concierge with a cool towel and mimosas. He wakes me around the resort point out all the things that I would want to check out. When we arrived at my room, my bags had been unpacked and clothes were hung up. At a bargain basement resort, you will receive a map and basic directions, and will have to haul your bags there by yourself. Is this how you imagine spending you time during your all inclusive trip? In a Bargain Basement Resort, you we will have difficult time find space on the beaches or pools. To make money, Bargain Basement Resorts have to fill the beds. And they do! The lines are long and the beach beds are few. You have probably seen ads that say 5 nights all inclusive on Seven Mile Beach in Jamaica $500 per person with flights! Great deal right? Probably not. When you look at that per person rate you to think that at least half is going to flights (more than likely more than half). So how does the resort make money? The answer is drinks, specifically alcohol and soda. You see not all all inclusive resorts are as inclusive as others. (Confused yet?). Premium and luxury resorts will include premium and imported sodas and alcohol in their base package. Bargain basement resort DO NOT! Their packages tend to say things like “endless supplies of domestic drinks including alcohol!” Woohoo? Nope the most important word there is “domestic”. So in the case of our great Jamaica deal above. You will get all the Jamaican soda and alcohol that you like. Order a coke or a bud light you will see it on your bill at check out. People tend to over imbibe on vacation, and they forget what is included in their package. It’s not unheard of to have bar tabs of $1000. You would have been much better served to go to a better resort. I said earlier in the week that I would explain why I never send anyone to a bargain basement all inclusive resort. I have always maintained: it is better to get the worst room in a 5 star resort, than it is to get the best room in a 3 or 4 star resort. Oh so many reasons why! Let’s start with the main things people want in an all inclusive: food and drink. An upgraded resort is more than likely going to have better offerings on both. Multiple a la carte restaurant offering a variety of cuisines. Many times they have Michelin rated chefs and restaurants.You can try as many as you want. Not the case with Bargain Basement. While they may have a good number of restaurants and cuisines, the quality is often poor. They will also limit the number of a la carte restaurants you can go to. Many have rules that you can only go to a sit down restaurant 2 or 3 times a week. The rest of the time you have to eat at the buffet. Do you feel like eating chicken fingers every night? Premium All Inclusive Resorts are excellent resorts, and you will find many of the amenities offered at Luxury All Inclusive, but not at every level. These properties are perfect for people who want a luxury experience at less scary price tag. Also this level is where you will find Resorts with different club levels (the bracelet resorts...yuck). My tip for Bracelets Resort: make sure you understand exactly is included in each of the levels. Some resorts have private beaches, pools and restaurants for higher level guests.
