The first thing he smelled when he woke up was smoke then a bitter and salty taste in the air, he sat upright, jostling her in the process as he looked around and tried to focus so maybe his senses could piece together some idea about what was happening around their impromptu campsite. He heard Bayard -- head of the guard -- shout orders and sprung into action. They were being ambushed -- a bold move considering they were still in the outskirts of Erebus' kingdom.

For a split second, fear crept into his body and he felt as if he were that terrified and helpless child again. But as soon as the feeling came, it disappeared -- replaced by anger, ruthlessness, and bloodlust. He muttered a curse under his breath and dressed himself as quickly but efficiently as possible. He heard Lily call out, heard the tone in her voice and she sounded frightened -- as she should considering the smell of smoke was getting stronger now, fires evidently spreading through their camp. The king sheathed his sword then walked over to where he'd been laying next to her. He bent over and cupped her cheek, whispering to her "Shh, little one. Do not make a sound. They might not know you are here. Keep hidden under the furs. If you feel too hot or smell too much smoke I need you to flee. Just away.. I will find you after." he didn't feel like he had to explain the fact they were being attacked; she was intelligent and likely heard the urgency in his tone. And in a very rare display of tenderness, the king leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead. "No matter what you hear out there, I do not want you to move unless you have been found or you think the fire is close." it was spoken like an order, a tone he rarely took with her after the first few months but one that was necessary tonight.

After that, Erebus left. he rustled the drape of the tent and was sure to leave it open so (hopefully) no one would feel the urge to enter it in search of more people to kill. A look around and it was utter chaos, his jaw tightened and he slid on the helmet he wore to battle before hearing movement to the side of him. He turned just in time, unsheathing his sword and cleaving through the body in one swift motion. There was only half a scream heard from the guy. He recognized the army's regalia and now understood the meeting to call for peace had all been a set up -- this was exactly why he preferred to take rather than attempt to make nice with others. A second and third soldier approached him from either side and he could only smirk as he tilted his head a little, focusing on their movements. He could see the fear in their eyes as soon as they realized who he was and it only fed his desire for blood more. He didn't wait for them to attack, instead lunging at one straight on and pushing his sword straight through the center of his armor and torso; the attack had left him open for the other who managed to get a slice to his arm but they didn't carry through enough so it was nothing more than a cut. He growled and kicked back, toppling them off balance and sliding his blade out of the corpse before beheading the other.

"My king, you must take a horse and leave this to us." it was Amalric, second in command of the guard and always adamant to protect him at any cost. Erebus shook his head at him, "Like hell I will, slaughter who you must but capture those you can.. they wanted to watch us burn and I would like to return the sentiment." he grinned, nodding at the loyal soldier before going on to do the same.

By the time the fighting had ended, it was almost daybreak and the air was thick with the taste of ashes and metal, not even the light, chilled breeze of the beginning of autumn was enough to carry the stench away. The fires had been stopped a few tents away from Erebus' not that Erebus had a chance to check on his gift just yet. Besides, his mind was still elsewhere -- still reeling with the anger and bloodlust that always accompanied battle. Erebus' men had been victorious but Bayard had been injured badly and they'd lost ten men total, one of which was in the royal guard. They'd managed to capture twenty or so men and the other fifty lay strewn across the camp in their own blood and the ashes they'd caused. This was clearly a coordinated attack, they sent a small army to slaughter their traveling group of thirty. Erebus' sword arm was sore, his other arm cut up a few times, and he had an arrow wound at the back of his shoulder.

Still, he was livid and he screamed for everyone's attention. "Who is your leader!?" there was shouting and cursing before one of them separated himself from the captives. Erebus noticed the adornments (he was a royal guard for the the king to the south) and sneered as he nodded for Amalric to get him. "Then you get to watch." he started screaming when he realized Erebus' men had surrounded them with kindling and oils but Amalric hit him in the stomach to shut him up. "You are nothing! And for attempting to burn me and my men.. now you may suffer the same fate." a nod to his soldiers and the hastily-made pyre lit up in five different places. He waited and watched, listening to their screams and only letting that fuel his anger. Once the screams had died down, he turned his attention to the leader who was crying and completely distraught. He nodded a different soldier, "Right arm is mine, elbow down and his left leg, knee down. Wrap it when you are done, we are sending him back with a message."

He took Amalric to the side and had the male write up a letter stating the lives lost on the southern kingdom's order then declaring war against the kingdom. Erebus signed the paper after and had Amalric put the royal seal on it. "Tie this around his neck and when they are done making sure he never sees battle again, send him off. We leave at high noon." that was his last order before he finally pulled off his helmet and made his way back to the tent.

Erebus stripped down, leaving the bloodied clothes just outside the tent. He closed the flap again and used the bucket of water to clean off the wounds he could reach on his own; their wound aide had been burned first. A soft sigh though, now that the adrenaline was wearing down he could feel the sting but nothing was too bad that it couldn't wait. He splashed tepid water on his face then wiped his face off a bit. It took him a few minutes of stewing in the residual anger and pain and memories before he remembered his gift was here -- or at least should be.

The king dropped to the furs and carefully pulled them aside, meeting resistance from the hold the petite woman had on them. "Shh.. Liliana, it is me, little one. Your king." the blonde had one hand clenched in the furs and the other desperately attempting to either shield her face or cover her ears -- it was hard to tell. The same hands that had held the sword that just ended lives and same hands that had wrapped around a man's throat to snuff the life from him only hours ago pressed on either side of her face, calloused thumbs running over her cheeks. It was almost too much -- that she was here, in the middle of all this chaos and so utterly helpless. Almost too much to see her gentle and soft beauty after knowing nothing but anger and death and pain for the last few hours on end. He swallowed and sat down on the makeshift cot next to her, pressing his forehead against hers and breathing out, "You are safe, my little gift.." a pause as hands slid down her thinly covered body and then pulled her in against his still bloodstained chest. "I have you, no one will hurt you. You are safe now.." and he knew they still had half a day's ride back to the kingdom to endure in a few hours but that could wait. A second's hesitation before he brushed his lips against hers but the action was soft, almost loving, as he tried to soothe her still slightly shaking body.

King and god:

FC: still ATJ just appearance as his role in Outlaw King :)

Childhood/youth: He’d had the pleasure of living with his family for the earlier years of his life, his father was king and was a kind one and his brothers and sister treated him like there was not a largely untapped power inside him (his parents had been visited by mages and seers after Erebus' birth so his family knew he was the incarnate of a powerful deity). He was loved by his family as well as his father's kingdom. He was the third eldest son and had a younger sister other than his two older brothers. His powers hadn’t been truly accessible to him until he was 12, after his entire family was slaughtered in front of him. One night as the royal family was traveling back to the kingdom, they were ambushed by raiders. Raiders who mercilessly killed the king and queen only after slitting his brothers’ throats and after beating his younger sister to death. Erebus watched them do it, eleven years old and well-versed with a sword but no match for such a large group of men, and the only reason he’d escaped was because he hid amidst the chaos, lurking deep in the shadows – little did he know that was his gift protecting him. He eventually made it back to the kingdom, broken and in shock, and that was when he realized it was an attempted coup planned and executed by one of his father’s closest friends and confidants. His power came full blast shortly after that and Erebus made him pay.. made everyone that'd been involved pay and completely restructured the noble hierarchy around him that night. He left unrecognizable ribbons of flesh and cloth behind after tearing the would-be usurpers apart with his powers.

Rise to power to present: The kingdom was his, by birthright and because with his power no one would dare contest it. This was when he started retreating in on himself. As the king, he was advised to stay away from battle (especially considering he didn’t have heirs) but there was so much rage.. so much pain and darkness inside him he refused to stay away from battle. Even now he still has no heirs and he continues to lead his armies out to battle, being merciless on the battle field just as the raiders had been on his family. He is feared in the kingdom now, hardly anyone around that remembers what he was like as a boy, and in the surrounding kingdoms as well. He is seen as a monster and honestly that guise helps him deal with the reality of what happened, helps him separate himself from the pain he was forced to endure as a child.

Modification for if he is NOT a god in historical verse but still king: Same backstory, same tragic end to his family's life except instead of him tearing the nobles and attempted usurpers apart, he had them publicly executed (100 lashes each followed by being pummeled to death via stoning; lashes to represent the slitting of his brothers' and parents' throats and the stones to represent his sister being beaten to death). He was crowned shortly after the executions. Other than this, everything is about the same.
