Don't call me, text me! Vocal rest today, this is a very important part of a vocalist's life. There is often a misconception that vocalists have an on and off switch and a level that you can turn all the way up to 11 at any time of any day. Nope, that would be an electric instrument. This is real flesh and blood, the world's very first instrument, vocal chords. Malama your voice and it will sustain you. This is why I drink room temperature water and at our gigs when people ask me "why don't you drink at your gigs when the rest of your band drinks?", I say, the rest of the band isn't singing soul music, rock music, and ballads for the next 2-3 hours. This is also why you will see a LOT of lead vocalists skip out on after parties if they have gigs the next day even though the rest of the band gets to party, pre-gaming, and getting turnt up. I've even cut back on my polynesian "cheee-huuu's" throughout the years. There was even a point of 1 1/2 years where I completely lost my voice, I could barely even speak, it was sobering and terrrifying, and I thank the lord everyday for giving it back to me after I had abused it.
