The good thing about Science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.

Trump appointee Kristi Noem has broken FEMA. Days went by before ICE Barbie sent rescue teams to Texas, Noem is a loser who was appointed by an even bigger loser.

Noem is just one member of Trump's Team of Losers who seem to compete with each other to prove who is the most incompetent.

I think you should give something more than 3 minutes. No wonder so many writers remain unrepresented and unpublished! SMH.

* I know IMMEDIATELY if something is absolutely not for me. It doesn’t take three minutes -- it takes three seconds. I give it three minutes on the off chance that I am wrong. I am not wrong. If something is absolutely not for me -- it’s ABSOLUTELY not for me. Spending the day with it is not going to make it for me.

* IF something MIGHT be for me -- I don’t decline it. I put it aside and wait until I can spend a lot more time with it. I read and consider it very carefully. I might decide to decline, or I might decide to request a full, which I will also read and consider very carefully.

* If something IS for me, I spend weeks, months, or years with it -- so... ??? 

Think about it this way: 

You’re at a Tattoo Convention and you are going to be getting a tattoo. A convention center full of people are showing you their portfolios. Some of them might be great -- but let’s be real, You know that most of them YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TATTOO ONTO YOURSELF. You don’t need to study them with a magnifying glass to know that. You will flip through a ton - hundreds - maybe thousands! of portfolios - many of which are straight-up terrible - many of which are perfectly fine but not for you. There will be some that stand out. Those you will set aside and consider carefully later. You will choose the best of the best to actually ink upon your skin.  

How long do you think you spend flipping through each “not right for you” portfolio? Because I bet it’d be less than three minutes. :-)

I’m about to give a presentation at the Big Data Innovation Summit in Las Vegas about effective strategies for overcoming data hurdles in the City of Los Angeles. Included in the presentation is a new chart that looks at distribution of fire engine response times over the last four years. Using this distribution baseline, LAFD can more robustly monitor performance, including among specific stations to improve performance.

Isn't that kind of insulting though? I mean, fair enough turning down a query if it's not your thing. There could be lots of reasons for that. But to read a query and sample pages and first few chapters and LIKE IT ENOUGH that you request a full manuscript - then turn THAT down only an hour or two later? I mean, at least wait a few days to reject it. That would have seriously wounded me. Or am I reading this situation wrong?

How long is the book? They already read the first three chapters -- so they read for another hour or two... and either finished the book, or realized that it wasn’t for them before finishing it. So they replied. Like... do you want them to just arbitrarily sit on a response for no reason? They didn’t *insult* the author, or mail it back in an envelope full of anthrax or anything - they just said “thank you for sharing this with me, it’s not a fit.” Don’t you want an agent who LOVES YOUR MANUSCRIPT? 

Realize that the vast majority of agents will never give you a response on a full in two hours. That’s not because they can’t read a book, or the majority of a book, in two hours - that’s because they won’t even START it for three months. Is that better? Hm.

I still think you're wrong. I think most agents and publishers have too much of a trigger gun reponse to queries, partials, and fulls. If people spent more time considering, sleeping on things, etc. I think it would be better. Anne Rice's first publisher bought her first book because it showed promise but needed so much work she had her REWRITE most of it and the entire ending. I know you occasionally get an R & R but it seems those days are gone. Is it because you get too many subs?

I take on things that need a lot of work... all the time? I think most agents do. Also when we sell things, the editors typically have authors do quite a lot of revision? This is normal. I’m not hair-trigger declining things because they need work. Believe it or not — I know the difference between something that IS RIGHT FOR ME but NEEDS SOME WORK and something that is JUST NOT RIGHT FOR ME.

Yes. We get an awful lot of submissions. A very sizable portion of them ARE LITERALLY not what I rep! They are NOT APPROPRIATE for me. I can reject them in two seconds because NO AMOUNT OF WORK short of *writing a different book* will make them what they are not.

If something seems like it has potential to be right for me — obviously I DO take time with it. (And if i think it has potential but maybe not *for me* — I also share it with my colleagues.)

So like, whatever. If you think I’m wrong there’s an elegant solution: ignore me. 😃
