A friendly reminder that in 175 days Google plans to implement a lock on what android apps can be installed on Android
Any apps installed on Android will have to:
Pay a fee to Google
Agree to Google's terms and conditions
Provide ID Verification
This is the next step to a completely corporation-controlled internet, because here's what this entails:
A lot of passion and personal projects will die because the developer cannot pay google - and you know this will become a subscription one day. A lot of Open Source innovation will die, which is exactly the point - these kinds of projects keep the internet open and transparent.
Google will be able to control what content you install by choice - anything that goes against their corporate interests, and they can just say nope. And make it completely uninstallable on every mobile phone in the world. This applies to any app being developed, even if it isn't using any google services or tooling. This will no doubt be used for content restriction, something that historically has gone really well.
Google (and by extension, the government) will know exactly who is responsible for developing any app being run on android, even if it isn't distributed through their own store. In a world that is going increasingly towards surveillance, this is an incredibly concerning step.
People all over the world will, once again, be forced to send their sensitive documents to a company and take a gamble that they will keep it safe. Which, judging by what has occured in the past, is a gamble we really should not be taking.
Companies such as Discord have, in the past and in recent events, been pressured to take back their privacy-invasive rules due to public pressure. It is now time to force Google to do the same.
So what can you do?
Post on social media. Let people know of Google's insane plan so that we can get more outrage and dissent on this issue
If you are a developer, writer, content creator - let your audience know what is happening. You can check out Keep Android Open for resources to help you do that.
Use Open Source tooling. Check out F-Droid, which is an open app store with a lot of incredible apps that don't have the resources to deal with Google's bullshit.
Check out some Open Source applications. Some of the incredible apps I use on a daily basis are Newpipe, Outertune, timeto.me, ente, QRAlarm, and Notesnook.
Let Google know you absolutely do not approve of this initiative
In a world moving increasingly towards mass surveillance and total governmental and corporate control over every aspect of our lives, it is our responsibility to fight back in every way we can.
We know Ao3 doesn't have an app and yet they keep popping app. That makes me feel that people want it and get exploited by the fake ones.
There isn't a plan to make one but, have a PWA been considered?
Hey chaoticneutralchocolate -
The main reason that apps pop up for AO3 is not because fandom folks want it, so much as app-making-folks want to monetize fans accessing fanfiction. All those apps? they have ads. that make the developer money.
Currently, we do not have an API (application program interface), which is needed to allow an app to interact with our servers. Developing such an interface and then the apps themselves (for the various mobile platforms) would take significant time and coder effort. It’s unlikely to happen while the Archive code is still rapidly changing, as this would require the apps to be updated for each change. You can see more details at our news post on the subject: https://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/3390 .
Even a browser-based app interface would be a tremendous amount of work that we do not have the staffing (or inclination) to establish or maintain.
In the meantime, you should be able to access the fully functional Archive using your device’s browser with our mobile stylesheet, and to download works to read offline with an e-reader app. You can also add a link to the site on your home screen ( https://www.howtogeek.com/196087/how-to-add-websites-to-the-home-screen-on-any-smartphone-or-tablet/ ) for quick access!
I should note that, due to fannish response, the app stores removed a number of unofficial apps in 2020. See the Fanlore page for more information: https://fanlore.org/wiki/AO3_App_Wars
(if you see an app out there claiming to be AO3 or using our logo, send a message to OTW Legal and let them know the name of the app so they can look into it!)
I hope this answers your question!

On representation: something along the lines of this is probably already on this blog, but I really want to see more Asians with (respectfully-portrayed) disabilities!!!
one real-world example: I'm Vietnamese diaspora and I've always felt a little whitewashed because my autistic sensory issues generally prefer Western food and I have to wear headphones during Tết festivities.
Asian characters with intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, difficulty/inability to communicate verbally; who use mobility aids and/or AAC, have stigmatised mental disorders (dissociative, psychotic, schizospec, personality-based) without being Tragic and Evil and Scary and Edgy, elders of the family who have developed disabilities in old age; Asians whose family are accepting and compassionate towards their disability (!!!), Asians who are chronically ill, Asians with symptoms that are "gross" or "scary", Asians with high support needs...
YES!!!! VERY MUCH THIS!!!
Of course, there should be better representation for disabled characters in general and a decent portion of what you said feels applicable to a lot of these characters. However, I feel like this is very heavily intertwined with the model minority myth if we're specifically referring to the Asian diaspora. How such perfectionist standards make disabled Asian people feel like they're not living up to their potential or the pressure put onto them. How they may feel like they have to hide their disability (or disabilities), which prevent(s) them from getting the support they need because they are hyperaware of how they are perceived by society at large. That is a large oversimplification but that was the first thing I thought of! It's not super difficult to find research papers going over this as well.
Participants reported a several common sources of stress that affect the mental health of Asian American young adults including: pressure to meet parental expectations of high academic achievement and live up to the “model minority” stereotype; difficulty of balancing two different cultures and communicating with parents; family obligations based on the strong family values; and discrimination or isolation due to racial or cultural background. Young Asian Americans tend not to seek professional help for their mental health problems; instead they use personal support networks—close friends, significant others, and religious community. Participants suggested that Asian cultural norms that do not consider mental problems important, and associated stigma of seeking professional care might undermine their mental health help seeking behavior.
Lee S, Juon HS, Martinez G, Hsu CE, Robinson ES, Bawa J, Ma GX. Model minority at risk: expressed needs of mental health by Asian American young adults. J Community Health. 2009 Apr;34(2):144-52. doi: 10.1007/s10900-008-9137-1. PMID: 18931893; PMCID: PMC3296234.
(This abstract says that participants said Asian culture doesn't really deem mental problems as important, and I want to clarify that this does not mean ALL Asian people disregard mental health 😭 One of the other asks I got in response to something I answered made me feel I should be more clear about this. These findings are broad, and there are reasons as to why mental health in certain communities of color isn't talked about as openly.)
I don't remember the exact phrasing, but I've heard people discuss how "low needs" isn't really a helpful descriptor for the actual disabled person, but for the people around them. So it kind of comes across as "how much you burden others" which is just, not true. I cannot emphasize that enough. You do matter, and your needs matter, and the right people will support and stick by you. So having representation of Asian characters with disabilities is equally as important as having properly represented Asian characters without them.
ALSO I realized as I went over this post that I started to switch between "disabled characters" and "characters with disabilities" I've heard both being used but if there is a correct and/or preferred phrase, feel free to correct me.

ROBART III prototypes (1992 - 2002) by H.R. Everett, 717 Unmanned Systems Group, US Navy.
"ROBART III was a concept-development platform built in my garage, optimally configured to support a development role in a laboratory environment. This 1992 photo [first photo] of ROBART III shows the 6502-based video motion detector developed under ROBART II atop the head, with its pin-hole camera midway between the two head-mounted sonar transducers. The central card cage has been vertically extended to accommodate more single-board computers, circa 1995 [second photo]. Early configuration of ROBART III showing the five-element sonar array on the mobility base, circa 2000 [third photo]. ... The five-element array has been replaced with a four-element array and a 2D Sick lidar incorporated into a front bumper, circa 2002 [fifth photo].
The non-lethal-response weapon shown in [the final photo] was a pneumatically powered dart gun capable of firing a variety of 3/16-inch diameter projectiles. By way of example, simulated tranquilizer darts (20-gauge spring-steel wires terminated with 3/16-inch nylon balls) illustrated a potential response application involving remote firing of incapacitating rounds by military or law enforcement personnel. A rotating-barrel arrangement was incorporated to allow for multiple firings (six) with minimal mechanical complexity. The spinning barrel also imparted a rather sobering psychological message during system initialization."

KyLar ver. 1.0.0 - SCP- 1471 (EUCLID)
'Never settle for those awkward feelings of being alone ever again! KyLar is an exciting and interactive experience that will keep you engaged and intrigued! The anxiety of social situations can be nerve-wracking but after a few hours of KyLar, you will soon forget about all those painful emotions of disappointment! Remember, the more you participate, the more KyLar will engage with you! Your experience is completely up to you!'
SCP-1471 or also known as 'KyLar' is a free to download application for mobile devices made available on several well known online applications platforms including but are not limited to: Google Play and the Apple App Store. SCP-1471 has no listed developer and has the anomalous ability to not only bypass all approval process to be listed on the online application platforms but also can not be removed by any program removal application.
Once SCP-1471 is installed in a phone, it will begin to send pictures to the user through text messaging between every 3-6 hours. All pictures will contain some detail of SCP-1471-A, either located in the foreground or background. On the first day, the pictures containing SCP-1471-A would be taken in places that are usually frequented by users in the past. However, after 48 hours, the pictures sent containing SCP-1471-A would be taken in places that were recently visited by the user. After 72 hours, the pictures sent containing SCP-1471-A would be taken of the user in real time, with shots of SCP-1471-A standing in the foreground, background or even behind the user at times. Users who have been exposed to SCP-1471 for more than 90 hours will begin to visualize or see SCP-1471-A in their peripheral vision and reflective surfaces.
SCP-1471-A has been described to be a short human male with pale skin, sunken eyes with dark eye bags and a mop of black messy unkempt hair. SCP-1471-A is always seen wearing very loose gray trousers and an oversized black hoodie. In some instances, SCP-1471-A would appear in some pictures holding a knife in one hand and some users have reported that the longer they take to respond to SCP-1471-A's pictures, he will look far more hostile and crazed in the next pictures. However, it is unclear if continued delay in response to these text messages would lead to a hostile encounter with the anomalous entity. So far, affected users, who have continued exposure to SCP-1471, had begun visualizing SCP-1471-A in real life, where SCP-1471-A would try to visually communicate with them in some way. However, all reported users have failed to understand or comprehend the meaning of these attempts.
The only way to reverse the anomalous effects that is occurring to the users will be to remove the users from the continuous exposure of the images completely before 90 hours have passed.
