guys big question here:
“They’re testing our loyalty without actually saying it.” Xaden folds his arms over his chest, standing at my side. “According to the missive, if we leave now, we’ll make it to the new location of headquarters for Fourth Wing at Eltuval in time to carry out our orders for War Games, but if we leave, the trading post of Resson and its occupants will be destroyed.”
He has to choose. That’s what the War Games missive said. He can abandon that village or his command, who’s now waiting for him at Eltuval.
just 10 days before graduation, xaden and everyone he picks for his squad for the last war game (presumably mostly marked third and second years) is basically sent to die betraying navarre or run away proving their loyalty.
notice how i said "run away" and not "live"? the last war game was expected to be the deadliest, wasn't it? that's why xaden wanted violet (and liam) in his squad in the first place.
xaden abandoned his wing. so what happened to those at eltuval without him?
did his wing executive officer step in (or were they one of the ones who came with him to resson)? did fourth wing absolutely eat shit? /i have a sinister theory about this which i will post later
and most of all, what consequences will there be for xaden and the remnants of his squad when they do return alive, as traitors? command would know. but the wing would ask them where they were (remember violet was asleep for 3 days in aretia), what they fought, why half of them are gone, why xaden didn't come to his post.
the wingleader would bear the worst of it, if he can even go back to basgiath. if xaden and the other third years don't return, will they even graduate? what are he and the rest of his squad going to do? lie to command that they got caught in a storm, lost their way and never made it to the outpost in resson in the first place? so they never had to be forced to make the choice to betray navarre or leave people to die? but they still can't explain losing half their squad. what, they'll lie that they fought gryphon riders on the way?
El mejor Ship 🥺👌✨
I regularly think about how Sloane new about what happened to in Resson.
And the more I think about it, the more I can only accept that xaden was the one to tell her.
There’s no way he would let anyone else tell his brother’s little sister the news.
I just imagine him flying out to wherever she’s fostered on his way to his duty station immediately after graduation. Telling her everything because he can’t not tell her everything. He probably blamed himself, not Violet, but Sloane probably couldn’t bring herself to blame him, but Sorrengail was easier for her to blame.
wait so... the people at the athebyne outpost (who were begging for reinforcements for some time now), did they finally get the green light to abandon it or did they abandon it themselves, because both cases pose an interesting question:
if command told them they can abandon the outpost (so xaden and crew would find it empty for war games) and sent them a letter with instructions, it must've come with the letter for xaden: did the southern wing just leave knowing some basgiath students would be sent in this very dangerous place beyond the wards alone for war games??
if the southern wing had already abandoned their post, how did leadership know it would be empty? did they send someone to this dangerous (and now empty) outpost only to check and to leave the letter for xaden, essentially sentencing him and his squad to nearly certain death?
