For the drabble game: The Research Project but what if Violet wrote a different genre?
Oh this is a fun one. And really got me thinking!!!! Hope you like it!!!
Leaves crumble beneath my feet with each step, the sounds of squelching and crunching as I run through the trees. Strands of hair slip out of my braid and whip me in the face, stinging my skin like a leather cord. I nearly lose my footing over a fallen log and a curse slips through my lips, my lungs filling with the cold and wet air of the Esben Mountains.
My heart thuds against my ribcage as I shift courses, veering to the left when a boulder comes out of nowhere. Fear and adrenaline and even a hint of excitement flood my chest as I sniffle, my cheeks and nose bright red.
Another howl sounds in the night and my blood chills, even more than it already was.
Fuck. It was a stupid fucking idea to come into the woods tonight. The cold is going to kill me, or he's going to get me. Wherever he is...
But he needs to find me first.
Another howl, this one sounding much much closer.
I peer up at the night sky and the full moon that hangs in the middle. Even the moon itself is a bright fucking warning sign: stay out of the woods. Didn't Rhi say once that that's when the crazies show up at the hospital? Hasn't Ridoc said that all creatures come out when the moon i full?
I should have waited to do this until the day time. I didn't need the research that badly. But now its too fucking late. I'm being fucking hunted and the water is getting through my boots and my hat is falling off and-
The howl is right behind me now, and this time a low distinctively male growl follows it up. It reverberates against my back and I can feel the vibration as if he were right on top of me.
I pick up my pace and dart to the right, hoping that he can't pick up my tracks. I hop behind a few trees and hear the howl grow quieter, pressing a hand against my chest in relief.
I think I've escaped.
I rest against a tree, leaning my head against it and catch my breath. A smile creeps on my face and I pull out my phone, ready to claim my victory when-
A set of arms twist around as they pull me into a warm, solid chest. I scream but its cut off as I'm shoved to the ground, a strong arm cushioning my head so it doesn't slam into the dirt. My heart thuds as the faint howl and growl are now dripping into my ear like smooth, sticky honey. His breath is hot against my temple.
"Boo." When I open my eyes my idiot neighbor, Xaden Riorson, whom I've been sleeping with but am absolutely not in love with, is above me wearing a victorious smirk. I shove at his chest but he doesn't move and I feel his chuckle through my damp clothes.
"Where the fuck did you learn to howl and growl like that?" I ask him with a huff. When he'd offered to pretend to chase me for my new horror novel to know what my character would experience, I'd nearly laughed him out of bed. But he played the part spectacularly, and now, well...I've never complained about him on top of me.
"A gentleman never tells..." He shrugs in answer and brushes some hair from my face. He leans in to drag his nose along the slope of my face as if scenting me. As if he really were a creature who stalks their prey, and he's a heartbeat from devouring me. "But there's nothing gentlemanly about what I want to do to you, Violence."
He nips at my neck and I pull him down until he's fully on top of me. And when he growls this time I know he's not playing the werewolf or helping me with my research. He's just him.
I don't think there's gonna be any sex in my horror novel. The werewolf may consume my heroine, but not in the way Xaden is teasing. But I don't care. I'm cold and I want him to warm me up.
"Let's try vampires next." I ask him before bringing his mouth to mine.
