You don't need a balloon or any preparations for this and it can provide little ones with hours of entertainment! Literally! All you need is an empty water bottle or pretty much anything made of plastic. Rub it vigorously on your hair and then place it next to a thin steam of water. Like magic, it bends the steam due to static electricity. The water is a mix of particles cancelling each other's charge. The bottle has a negative electric charge after rubbing it against the hair which causes the positively Hydrogen atoms from water to be attracted to it. The speed of the water falling and gravity also act on the water preventing it from sticking to the bottle as soon as it comes close to it. Remember to recycle the bottle! Another trip to the restaurant, another great #restaurantphysicslesson (follow the tag please) It failed repeatedly which got us some interesting looks from the staff and a plate full of wet towels. How it works? Fill a shot glass to the brim with water and place a credit or business card on top. Flip it and the water stays in. YAY! That's the theory but in practice it failed us a few times. What happens? The water forms a seal with the shot glass that doesn't permit air to get in so the entire contraption stays together. #restaurantphysicslesson #surfacetension experiment. This never gets old or boring. If you take the kids out today, try it! They will love it! The water molecules hold the clip afloat because of their attraction to each other. As soon as the clip is pushed under the water, the surface tension breaks and allows it to sink to the bottom. #restaurantphysicslesson Great experiment to discuss #SurfaceTension Archimedes principle and have fun at the restaurant. If you haven't seen this, watch it until the end. It will be a great trick to show at the next party. In this case, the water molecules close to the wall "pull" on it and the water forms a barely observable dip towards the middle of the glass. The highest point in the water is the edge and the cork is naturally pulled to it. When the glass is full just slightly over the edge, the water forms a dome right before it starts spilling over thanks to surface tension. Another successful #restaurantphysicslesson Water, pepper and hand soap (can use other liquids) The soap is able to break down the surface tension of water. This is why soap is a good cleaner. As the soap touches the water, the surface tension changes and the pepper is pushed either under or sideways.
