Peppercorn
...
Before you ask - Yes - I am going to review every restaurant within a kilometre radius of my boyfriend's apartment. Let's move on.
Peppercorn is located in Cremorne on the same side of Military Road as the Orpheum. It's rated quite well on Urbanspoon.
A group of us went on Saturday night and were well-pleased that there was a table free. The menu was extensive with some interesting additions (lamb's brains - apparently quite nice despite the strange texture). We chose a variety of mains from fish to pie to beef wellington.
The food was served in a timely fashion. Sadly, one waitress ruined the ambiance with her abrupt attitude but the other was making moves towards a member of our party so it evened itself out.
I quite enjoyed my main (fish) but apparently the seafood pie was too fishy (and not enough other seafood). My favourite course was dessert - date and walnut pudding - delicious. The other desserts were great, too, but there wasn't really enough of them.
Would I go there again? If there were no tables available anywhere else.
Food - 7/10
Ambiance - 7/10
Service - 7/10

Manly Pavilion
...
Ever since I moved to Sydney, I've been noticing the demise and then the rebuild of the Manly Pavilion. I always thought it would be a fabulous spot to eat, and I was right.
Tucked away on the western side of Manly Wharf, the Manly Pavilion is secluded and peaceful. As soon as you enter, there is a warm ambiance that's enhanced by a semi-open fire (very difficult to walk past). Immediately, the view of the ocean is apparent and sweet; the Manly Pavilion has 180 degree views of the ocean.
The menu is suitable for a wide range of tastes but is probably classified as modern-Australian. As bread was served upon arrival, we didn't bother with an entree and skipped straight to the main course. We decided to share the lamb shoulder which arrived in-tact, on the bone and was delicately pulled-apart for us by the waitress. We could see straight away how tender the meat was.
It was delicious and filling. The accompanying potatoes and veggies matched beautifully.
When the dessert menu came past, we had a look but nothing really grabbed our attention. And anyway, we were quite satisfied after the lamb.
The service was fabulous - attentive but not stalkerish. The ambiance was perfect - warm and welcoming but not too loud.
There is one downfall - it's pricy so be prepared to cry as you put your credit card on the desk.
Food - 9/10 (1 point loss to unappealing desserts)
Ambiance - 10/10
Service - 10/10

Steel
...
Is it a car? Is it plane? No! It's a fine-dining restaurant right here in Sydney. Steel is a relatively new restaurant in the city of Sydney. Owned by the same people as Pony, you'll notice a similar feel to the decor - easily-viewable kitchen, simple yet funky decor and ambience-enhancing tunes.
The menu is a Modern Australian theme with a couple of cultural additions. We ordered duck spring-rolls for entree - delicious, simple and a good portion. We both ordered fish - James; John Dory, Me; Kingfish (I wanted the John Dory but he beat me to the punch). Both our dishes were really yummy (But I wouldn't say 'orgasmic'). Surprisingly, we didn't order dessert.
The ambience was great and the service attentive but with a sense of humour (which I like).
Steel is fabulous for a romantic date or a group dinner. It's easy to chat in such a comfortable environment and the decor is a great talking point.
