Not many people know that Matt was an extremely accomplished jazz bassist in addition to his prowess as a guitarist. He was successful as the bass player for Overwhelming Colorfast, The Posies and Ian Moore because of his early experience in jazz, his musicality and overall understanding of the role of the bass in a song. I still remember a couple of the early bass tricks he showed me while we were music theory geeks in college. The elusive “bucket of shit” bass run (Google it) and “false harmonics”. This was pre YouTube and was the stuff they didn’t really teach you in class.
