We are extremely sad to hear of the untimely demise of renowned mountaineer and star Everest summiteer Ang Rita Sherpa, 72, this morning, at 10:40 am Sept. 21, 2020, in his residence at Boudha, Kathmandu. Sherpa was a celebrity mountaineer, who had carved a niche in the world of mountaineering with 10 successful summits to Mt. Everest, without supplemental oxygen, for which he even won the Guinness World Record. He was nicknamed “Hiu Chituwa” or “Snow Leopard” for his agility and survival skills to brave the harsh mountains and come home unscathed after each accomplished mission. Sherpa hailed from Thamo, Solukhumbu, and is survived by a daughter and two sons. The body will be placed at a Sherpa Gomba, or holy site, in Kathmandu, and cremated on Wednesday according to Sherpa tradition. His death is a great loss to the climbing fraternity and the tourism industry of Nepal. We send our deepest condolences to the grieving family members and friends and offer prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
