What you are doing is the best way keep him alive: celebrate his life and the positive ways he's impacted yours. We never really get over the loss, we only learn how to start and keep moving forward. *giant hug from a random follower* It always helps me to talk about the ones that I've lost. If you'd like to talk about your dad, I'd be happy to listen.
I will always take hugs, so thank you for that (and you’re not some random, we haven’t interacted much, but I recognize you!)
The year my dad died was particularly difficult, as I also lost a friend that was like a brother, my grandfather who was like a second father, and my grandmother (who I had a strained relationship with, but it was still sad), and so his yarzheit is also a reminder of all the other loss that followed his so closely.
My daughter asks about him, and we have pictures of him in the house, and I sing the songs he used to sing to me to my girls. It’s hard to talk about him most days, because our relationship was difficult, to say the least, and it was only in the year before he died that we really began to reconcile; I mourn the lost years and the missed time as much as I mourn him, and so it’s always a double edged sword to think of him purposefully.
I am comforted that we made our amends to one another, and that he got to know my eldest for a little while. Thank you so much for the prompt to talk about him, it’s letting me cry a little, which I’ve been avoiding doing, and probably really needed. If you ever need to talk, I’ll be more than happy to listen <3
