‘What If?’ AU drabble/scenario
I do not write often/at all, please be kind if this isn’t great…
The night had been perfectly normal up until that point… Stephanie thought it was just another trick-or-treater when the doorbell rang, opening the door with the candy bowl in hand. Instead of kids in costume, though, she was greeted by two Miles County officers.
“Good evening, are you Stephanie Pattel?” The taller asked, expression and tone so solemn that it instantly made her heart drop to her stomach.
“Yes… What is this about?”
“I am officer Miller, and this is officer Dallas from the Miles County Police Department. May we come in and sit down?”
Stephanie’s whole body felt like it locked up, fear seizing her. She stepped aside…
The three entered the living room, where Alan was already on the couch, watching some sitcom. His eyes met his wife’s, then the officers.
“Steph? What’s going on?” Alan questioned, muting the TV as Stephanie sat beside him.
Miller and Dallas sat on chairs across from them, meeting the couple’s eyes with undoubtable empathy.
“Mrs. Pattel, Mr. Pattel, we’re sorry to inform you that your son, Ryan, was found dead.”
