I work at this retail job and the people I work with are people who I would never talk to outside work. So I have to be fake nice to them and their red flags but its so draining & tiring. How do I deal with this?

I'm gonna go off on a rant, and y'all are just gonna have to let me go there.

As you all know, I work at Hot Topic.

Do you see this? No, it is not drug paraphernalia. It's one of our anti-theft sensors, that's been BURNED by thieves in an attempt to remove it from a jacket, which was damaged in the process. One of my coworkers caught the thieves burning it, and other anti-theft sensors in an attempt to steal clothing from us.

Why is this a big deal? Well number one they were attempting to melt these off of FLAMMABLE CLOTHING!!! And number two, this can cost us our jobs. This is just as bad as people who rip sensors off clothing, leaving big holes in them. Or cut the sensors off with wire cutters. Actually, scratch that, this is WORSE because our store could LITERALLY CATCH FIRE!!!

Anti-theft sensors aren't platic the whole way through, y'all. They have metal cores that create the locking bond! You can see part of it exposed in this picture.

I get the whole "Fuck capitalism!" mentality, but seriously y'all are getting fucking DANGEROUS with this theft shit. What if they had started a fire? My store, which employs THIRTEEN PEOPLE would've been destroyed (not to mention the stores surrounding mine probably would've ALSO been damaged). If too much theft happens, our fucking livelihoods are at stake.

And let's fucking face facts: Y'all aren't stealing from Hot Topic, because you're anti-capitalism. Y'all are stealing from Hot Topic, because you're fucking cheap and why buy a $1.99 button when you could get it for free, right???

"No! I'm anti-capitalism!" BULLSHIT! Did you know Hot Topic is one of few corporations in America that hires at age 16, allows trans employees to go by their chosen names (AND changes them in their systems), AND donates money to music, art, mental health, and LGBT charities? That's pretty anti-capitalist if I do say so myself.

(Side note:: HotTopic owns BoxLunch, which is ALSO crazy expensive. You know why??? BECAUSE EVERY X AMOUNT OF MONEY YOU SPEND THEY DONATE A MEAL TO SOMEONE IN NEED!!!)

So anyways...Do everyone a fucking favor and stop FUCKING STEALING SHIT YOU DUMB FUCKS I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU SET MY STORE ON FIRE DOING THIS SHIT I WILL THROW YOU OVER THE RAILING AND WATCH YOU FALL THE THREE STORIES TO THE FUCKING FOOD COURT I SWEAR TO GOD.

Overheard a coworker telling customer service, "Oh don't bother calling X in, they don't need any more hours." First of all, you don't know how many hours they have or who actually NEEDS hours. Second of all, if you're insisting not to call X in does that mean you're volunteering to stay late? Cause or else we're down a person on a Sunday and that's not gonna be good at all!

I hope every fucker who thinks retail employees look "lazy" if they're allowed to sit gets strapped into IKEA's sitting machine for eternity.

Very soon my job is getting more self-checkout machines that nobody asked for and I feel like I need to make this known to people who don’t work in customer service:

- when you use self checkout you are actively supporting putting us out of work no matter how nice you are. STOP. Let us ring you up. (we’re usually faster anyway)

- self checkout machines break down WAY more often than regular registers so if you think you are gonna get out of the store faster using self checkout boy are you in for a fuckin suprise when those machines just suddenly stop working for no reason or eat your money.

- waiting in line at self checkout when there are open registers with cashiers just standing there waiting for customers makes you look like an idiot

- stores have more theft at self checkout than ANY OTHER AREA. Don’t support stealing.

- please come to my checkout line!!! I’m friendly and I love my job and I won’t angrily beep at you when you swipe your chip card instead of inserting it
