Super Bomberman Collection

Over a decade after Konami’s acquisition of Hudson Soft, the Super Bomberman Collection marks a potential sea change for the treatment of the character’s history. Up to this point, it has been exceedingly rare for Konami to do anything with Bomberman’s past beyond the occasional merchandising opportunity or Bombergirl character. Even before the acquisition, the Super Bomberman games skipped Nintendo’s Virtual Console service and never had any re-releases outside of an incredibly obscure PC compilation. But at long last, this collection by Red Art Games brings all five Super Bomberman games together (with a couple of bonuses) and gives people a chance to easily check out some of the most notable games in the entire franchise.

Gradius Origins

Gradius Origins is a compilation of Konami’s classic arcade shoot-em-up series, developed by emulation wizards M2 as part of their ShotTriggers line. The marketing boasts “18 versions”, but these just refer to different arcade ROM sets with minor changes, as there are effectively six games included.

Telenet Shooting Collection

Telenet was a prolific game developer in the late 1980s and early 1990s, beginning with computers and quickly transitioning into console development. Their focus was often on quantity over quality, with their games often featuring stellar cutscene artwork and excellent music, but typically lacking when it came to the actual game. Their most well-known work is the Valis series in its many incarnations, as well as action games like El Viento and RPGs like Cosmic Fantasy and Arcus. They also published a handful of shoot-em-ups, originally published for the Genesis/Mega Drive and PC Engine, four of which are collected here on the Telenet Shooting Collection. This collection was published by Edia, owner of Telenet’s IP, and crowdfunded on the Japanese site Makuake.

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection

Most American and European gamers know Sunsoft as the creators of NES titles like Blaster Master and Gimmick!, and stellar licensed games like Batman and Gremlins 2. But the company had a life before this in Japan, with a number of unique titles that never left the country. The 2024 release Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection includes three of these games, newly localized into English and officially released for the international market.

Taito Milestones 3

The third Taito Milestones release continues the tradition of ten Taito arcade ports, compiled together into one package. These all use the same emulation as the Arcade Archives release, so they’re all high quality, though they’re missing regional variations and the bonus modes sometimes added to these releases. The theme of this compilation can roughly be described as “games influenced by Western pop culture, plus Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands“. Many of these titles also received Genesis ports, though obviously in all cases, the arcade versions here are superior.

Irem Collection Vol. 1

Irem Collection Vol. 1 launches a line compiling Irem’s arcade line-up, having three games each. The first contains the vertical shoot-em-up Image Fight and its console ports, its PC Engine exclusive sequel Image Fight II, and the R-Type-esque bio-horror shooter X-Multiply. The ports were handled by Ratalaika Games, using the same front end seen in their other emulation projects like Clockwork Aquario and Wonder Boy Collection. While the user interface is basic, it includes a nice selection of CRT filters, as well as the ability to rewind gameplay, handy for dealing with the high difficulty of these games. Also included are both the Japanese and international versions of these games, where they exist, though there’s really no difference between them.

Taito Milestones 2

The first Taito Milestones compilation was a somewhat baffling collection of titles from the company’s output of the 1980s. Thankfully, this follow-up focuses on a wider era, delivering ten Taito games that do a better job of showing off a sampling of their extensive library.

Ray’z Arcade Chronology

After re-releasing the Darius games as the Darius Cozmic Collection and G-Darius / G-Darius HD, M2 has returned to Taito’s other big shoot-em-up series with the Ray’z Arcade Chronology. The “Ray’z” name seems to be Taito’s official designation for the 90s-era trilogy consisting of RayForce, RayStorm, and RayCrisis, which all feature the same incredibly satisfying lock-on laser game mechanics as well as the usual spacey soundtracks from inhouse band Zuntata. This collection offers ports of all three games, based on the original arcade versions, developed by M2 as part of their ShotTriggers line of shoot-em-ups. Beyond their incredible emulation accuracy, they also include gadgets on the side of the screen, which let you know your current stage, the difficulty rank (if applicable), and status of your lock-on lasers. A particularly amusing option features background noise recorded from the Hey arcade in Akihabara, Tokyo, if you want to further immerse yourself in the action.
