Shantae: Risky's Revenge Director's Cut (PS4) Around this time last year I reviewed the sequel to this game, which was a massive improvement. If, like me, you decided to try more of the series after getting Pirate's Curse through humble bundle, lower your expectations, but prepare for a good time nonetheless. This is a short game, lasting about 5 hours on a casual playthrough (though somehow I managed to find all the hidden collectables during my first run). The plot is simple: Shantae is a half-genie. Her uncle uncovers a lamp with evil powers which he keeps secret from Shantae because of reasons, and it gets stolen by her nemesis, the pirate Risky Boots. Shantae sets out to find the three Seals that can release the lamp's dark powers before Risky can get her hands on them. The game doesn't take itself too seriously, even breaking the fourth wall at times. This is a metroidvania-style game: an action-platformer with one big game world, involving backtracking to access new areas once new abilities are obtained. Shantae can attack with her hair, transform into animals, or use weapons she can buy and upgrade. The game controls great, but I have two main issues: For a metroidvania game, the map lacks detail, and is thus unhelpful in determining which areas you've fully explored. To transform into animals, Shantae dances by holding down the triangle button, and letting it go during a specific pose determines what you transform into, which is a tedious selection method and negatively impacts the flow of the game. As for the elephant in the room: this is a PS4 port of a DS game. It does not look great on the big screen - a bit too pixelated for my liking. The hand-drawn art during menus and dialogue looks great though. Also, though there aren't too many tracks, the music is really upbeat and catchy. 7/10 #retrocollective #retrocollectiveeu #retrocollectiveeurope #rceu #retrocommunity #retrocoalition #platformer #metroidvania #shantae #ps4 #playstation #playstation4 #4theplayers #videogames #instagamer #instagaming #review #rccomplete #completionist #wayforward #limitedrungames
