Family Tree
Hot water brews in the coffeepot

awaiting our return.
Bread sits next to the toaster
ready to make merry.
Mittens, hats, scarves, and boots;
essentials on this wintery, Wisconsin evening.
Icicles hang between the lights
guiding us to our car.
Singing “Jingle Bells” all the way
kids shouting, “Hey!”
Lowes Creek calls to us
we must find the perfect tree.
Not based on size, shape, or fullness,
rather one that cries to our hearts
As the little ones shriek, “That’s the one!”
The scent of pine makes my nose smile
as my husband gives a slight growl
laying in the bitter snow
sawing the base of his beast.
Every year a little grumble,
or a little moan.
But ...
