Still can't get over how adorable Ray Shell/Rocky!Rusty is, even with how the costume evolved. I think his hat was representing a boiler dome, while Poppas was a train engineer?

The attention to detail in those designs is kinda insane... there’ll be a train somewhere in the world where the exact details match! Poppa definitely references the train engineer, more strongly than Rusty but it’s there in both of them.

//After having watched Greg Ellis in Vegas for so long, I just decided to finally listen to "Belle the Sleeping Car". The melody suddenly hit me! Its the same melody when Dustin arrives after the Starlight Sequence! "So come with me, of course I will. I can be pretty quick, downhill. But where are we going? Just trust in me." :D It's amazing how they'll reuse the same great music despite Belle being put back in the toy box.

I started doing a degree in music when I left school, and I wanted to analyse Starlight Express for my dissertation (I didn’t get that far before quitting to go make costumes!) because the way music is used, in the original production, is just wonderful. The best example is the Starlight Sequence - You have the melody of Rusty searching for guidance in the “Starlight Express”, and that melody keeps being heard for mystery like in the overture. Then you have the “Only He” melody, that is realisation, it’s confirmation, it’s success, and the two melodies - mystery and the answer - combine in that beautiful duet. I love it!!!

Belle’s Melody makes sense as a reprise of a reprise - in the original London show, Belle sang her song, and that convinced Rusty to race with her in Race 2 (the one that got cut). And that was a reprise of Belle’s Song, Rusty asking Belle to race with him. So it makes sense for Rusty to use the same melody asking Dustin to race with him later!

It’s like, musically, the original production of Starlight Express is a masterful tapestry, all woven together to create a beautiful image. But then each revision they’ve just taken scissors to it, chopped out a section, tacked in a new bit. Sometimes it fits, sometimes it doesn’t, it clashes and pulls it out of shape...

I have the same dislike of the new Tugger as I do for the Hip Hoppers. It appears ALW has the need to rewrite every show other than Phantom every few years. :p Oh wait he did make mistakes with Phantom, thats why we have Love Never Dies! haha

Well, Phantom’s re-writes are a lot more subtle, but the characterisation of Raoul in particular has gone from Disney Prince Hero to mean, controlling git, since Paint Never Dries opened...

But Street Cat Tugger and the Hip Hoppers are almost identical... backwards cap, string vest, baggy pants, bling, painfully 1990s stereotypes... actually more dated than the original more timeless version...
