The way her back straightened as the muscles in her legs tensed spoke volumes about the tension she felt. Looking over at John Seed anxiously, Jochebed wrung her hands together as she tried to swallow down the urge to bolt off. If he wanted he could have her gunned down in cold blood, if he felt particularly cruel he could have her locked up for life. Both options made her stomach twist painfully, the urge to vomit extremely prevalent despite her best efforts to remain calm.

“Where are you taking me?” Barnes’ cold corpse was still in the bed of the truck, the hint of skin peeking out from under the tarp. What now? She supposed that was up to John Seed to decide.

❝ you know what, if i didn’t know any better… i’d say this was a COMPLIMENT. ❞ though, if she’s being honest, hearing the chirp of john seed’s voice through the radio is UNSETTLING at best -- and downright TERRIFYING at worst. all of this time, trapped underground, raising their daughter. . . kim’s thought john to be dead. didn’t the deputy kill him? she’d had no idea that he’d actually SURVIVED, that he found his own way into the new world with them. . .it raises an instinct in her to glance around prosperity, checking for carmina. she sees her just outside, dismantling and cleaning her gun. she can’t help but WORRY -- despite how all of these years might change someone. . . john seed is still an enemy to her family.❝ this place has been an eyesore on hope county long enough -- it’s been overdue for a makeover. ❞       kim all but hisses into the radio,      ❝ and now, instead of being a symbol of all the pain and suffering you brought into our home. . . it’s a symbol of hope. think that suits it better, don’t you? ❞ though the structure is nearly the same, prosperity is almost unrecognizable as john seed’s old ranch. . . and every day more is added to it, more is created. every day it becomes more BEAUTIFUL. kim never quite thought her legacy would be to turn john’s ranch into something of hope for the community. . . but it seems FITTING.❝ the only way i could get more poetic justice is if i could bury your corpse outside the gates. good to know that’s an option. ❞

This was a last-ditch effort at saving his friends and Mark in any way he knew how. Lenny seemed too far gone for now, but Hannah, Sara, Mark .  .  . he remembers the begging at the riverside, and how the Baptist had ignored his shouting then. Why should now be any different? His optimism knows no bounds is why. Alex twists to face the Baptist, his eyes wide with shock. His blood was soaking through the back of his pants and he’d been shot. It’s a lot to take in, and he’s currently compartmentalizing, but he has to if he wants to have a conversation with what he assumes to be a madman.

He recoils at the use of his name. He remembered it? Must have been from the river when Sara and Hannah had been shouting his name while he fought the two men dragging him into the water, kicking and throwing elbows until they got a hold of him and forced him under. Things get blurry in his memory after that. He frowns, eyebrows coming together in confusion when he talks about them all having to atone. They were going to be punished for trying to expose the truth of the situation. That’s what this was.

“Hannah was going to basic, they’re going to know something’s up when she doesn’t show. My parents. You can’t – you can’t do this and get away with it. We’re not from here. Not Mark or Lenny.” He’s trying to help him see reason, explain it in a way that makes sense, but even he’s starting to wonder if it’ll matter. None of the local cops seemed keen on giving them the time of day, and Mark had warned them that no one was helping. If they were the only ones to answer his call then who was going to come for them? He’d gotten lost in his thoughts, not even seen John lean in. There’s no warning for the searing pain that interrupts his planning.

Alex yelps, arching back and kicking out to try and get away from John’s curling grasp but there’s nowhere to go in the car and he has a tight hold. He can feel his heartbeat through his leg, throbbing in time with his pulse. He’d tossed his head back when John first dug his fingers in, and he barely hears what he says about struggling and pain. It’s enough to get him to stop twisting and fighting his hold. Instead he goes limp, muscles as lax as they can be everywhere save for his injured leg. Eyes rimmed with red flick up to meet John’s once more.

“Blind to what? How does this help?” His voice catches on the last word, help.

The pain is accepted easily. It means the end. It means the sacrifice is close to being made. The shadows close in on his vision and the pain dwindles but flares when he coughs up more blood. This is his purpose. He is ready to finally rest without nightmares and demons preying on him in the night. Jacob only hopes his death doesn’t bring down his brothers too much. If he could stay with them, he would but it isn’t what is meant to be. He wasn’t expecting to hear more footsteps after the deputy left. He grabs at his knife. Ready to fend off anyone or any animal looking to benefit from his death before it happens.

I'm still very much on hiatus from the blog that he's on but I was thinking earlier today about how guilty Mark feels about dragging the trio into all of this. So, I figured I should ask, with everything that's happened to Alex and his friends, would he be likely to place blame or does he put him in the same place as them in not knowing what everybody was really walking into?

Ohhh good question! I haven’t been asked about this nor have I actually written any headcanons for it so HERE WE GO!

Alex doesn’t even factor Mark into the equation when itcomes to blaming someone for what happened to the trio. If anything he blameshimself for not doing the proper research on the job they’d taken. They wereall in a rush because of the approaching deadlines. Hannah going off to basic,Alex leaving the country. This seemed like an urgent case and so they took itwithout the proper background investigation done. It’s not Mark’s fault in theslightest from Alex’s point of view. They took on a responsibility to help him and they failed. That’s his burden to carry.

When they’re tied up in the barn I feel that’s hisfirst realization about how little Mark knew about what had happened to hissister, about the Project’s strength in the area. Alex realizes they’re ata huge disadvantage, but he’s still determined to help Mark, and his sister. Even inhis final video that gets posted to the internet he’s asking people not toforget about Lenny, about thembecause he’s still in this, doing it for Mark. He’d never blame him for what happened. Mark was in a desperate situation and reached out to what was probably a last resort in the trio. Alex doesn’t consider themselves to be anyone’s first option,and they’re usually not called in for pleasantreasons.

Mark is counted amongst the unfortunate trio in Alex’smind. He’s another causality that Alex takes responsibility for and wishes hecould have helped. None of them really knew what was going on until they were at theriver, confirming the rumors to be true that the Project was drugging people. 

TLDR;

Alex blames himself. He views Mark as a +1 tothe trio, and as someone who is a victim as much as Sara and Hannah are. He’sfairly cognizant of what Mark probably is thinking, especially about havingwritten to them and gotten them to come to Hope County in the first place. Mark’s got enough self-imposed guilt to deal with, Alex wouldn’tadd to it.

Alex isn’t even sure of what he’s saying anymore. All he knows is that he’d started talking about the steps taken to run the vlog. To keep their viewer base happy while making enough money to keep their channel afloat so they could do what they did. That involved side blogs, writing articles, and things like that. He’s just finished saying something about typos and editors, nearly out of breath with the amount of pain that shoots through his nerves. His head had fallen forward, chin dipping towards his collarbone. It takes a lot of effort to keep it held upright, but he lifts it when John speaks.

“Not nearly as bad as torturing people.” Alex quips weakly, flinching in pain when John’s fingers dug in a little too close to a scabbed over cut. A tickling feeling along his forehead means it must have opened again, blood dripping down. Eyes ringed with exhaustion follow John as he steps further away from the chair. Alex sighs heavily through his nose, exhaling a frustrated sound because John wouldn’t give up. What was it going to take? He groans softly. “A lot of it.” That was the nature of working in an online and tech-oriented field. It required extensive use of the internet, of editing programs, cell-phones, being in front of a screen as John pointed out. 

He smiles, the expression lopsided because he wasn’t wasting time if it kept John from hurting someone else. It was a win.

“Sure. I saw people who hurt one another for money. Liars who used the system to cheat their way out of justice. Police turning a blind eye.” He tilts his head, meets John’s eyes. “Kidnapping.” A pause, “We saw a lot. Heard people crying because they were so desperate for help.” Alex’s throat hurts. “But also a lot of typos. And did you know twitter doesn’t even let you edit your tweets? A ten second window is all I’m asking for.”

      He should really just shoot him for that, should heft up that         heavy gun and put a bullet between Johns eyes, and while         he knows that he doesn’t want to, he wonders for a few         moments if that's because he wants to use a knife to end         him instead.

       God, he had so many options.

       But John Seed needed to die eventually.
