Listened to Sam Harris' "Lying" audiobook while airbrushing models the other day. I liked the short and concise format. He could've made it much longer, but an audiobook you can consume in one sitting is cool.
He makes an interesting case that lying is never the right thing to do in one's personal life, both morally and as a rule for living a good life. No matter what, you're misleading people, or at best making decisions for them thinking you know better. Always telling the truth forces you to face the reality of your life and relationships.
It's a fascinating argument and I think it could even work for someone whose social circle consists entirely of PhDs with a toehold on the autism spectrum, but the rest of us will have to muddle through getting bad gifts from our father's girlfriend the old fashioned deceptive way.
