In many ways, the mirrorverse is the opposite of the normal universe. While there is light in the normal universe, the mirrorverse will have darkness. It seems to be how they generally make the mirrorverse, be it in Star Trek, but also in other series.

hello! yes the mirrorverse is essentially an alternate timeline. i was actually asked this before so here's my previous answer:
mirroverse originates from the TOS episode “mirror, mirror”, in which kirk and co. are transported to a parallel universe. the mirror universe is a lot darker than the main ‘verse; there’s no federation, and instead the terran empire rules over the galaxy using force and brutality.
from wiki: “Whereas the Star Trek universe usually depicts an optimistic future in which the Earth-based United Federation of Planets values peace and understanding, episodes set in the Mirror Universe show the galaxy to be marred by continual warfare, with compassion seen as a liability.”
also, the uniforms are different and spock has a beard in the mirrorverse. it was a great episode.
