if you are looking to go to a protest, here is my advice as someone who's been politically active for a decade:
if tear gas is expected, have swimming goggles or diving mask on hand. diving mask is better for hiding your identity especially if it's tinted, but costs more.
if you're wearing a bandana over your mouth and you get tear gased, DO NOT breathe through it and expect to be fine. the chemicals seep into the fabric, you're not getting any less of them than from the air.
tear gas takes multiple washes to get out and you really don't want to put on a shirt and suddenly start crying because it's still in there. so wash everything you were wearing at least twice.
physiological saline, disinfectant, sterile gauze, bandages. have them with you.
BRING WATER. DRINK WATER.
if you're just some guy, not affiliated with any group, dip out when it becomes too much to handle.
shout if you need help
turning off your phone is more for data reasons than for location tracking, don't do it if you're going alone. turn off location to be safe, turn on airplane mode when you're not using it, but everything else is just extra security you don't really need unless you're actually planning to get into a fight with the cops.
look at me. come closer. listen. this is an extension of point #5. i know the black bloc guys throwing bricks at the police look super cool and all, but you are not doing that on your first time. you are not doing that on your second time either. do you understand. i promise they don't need you. don't be a hero.
anyway iphones encrypt your phone's data automatically but if you have anything else look into how to do it. this is just a good security practice in general.
if you meet people and want to keep in touch: signal messenger > all. telegram is not safe. some people use wire but i can't personally speak on it.
if he has nice shoes he's a cop in civilian clothes. don't talk to him.
