when i first watched evangelion as a teen i was so shocked when they revealed toji was in eva-03 after shinji beat it up but now that im watching it again teenage me was such a fucking idiot

i'm. getting through evangelion with japanese subs. immersing. i'm surprised how much i'm able to get through the technobabble parts with just like some kanji knowledge and connecting the words spoken to what's happening on screen. the politics parts i struggle with though mostly because it's just gendo talking to people
only now do i realize it's really funny that the giant electric sniper rifle that takes the entire japanese energy grid to power is bolt-action

One thing that never fails to amuse me is NGE really traps you into the giant mecha trope for a long time. It has all the clichés of the genre. The wonder hero kids who can pilot giant robots, you can even "predict” which one of these is piloted by the boy and the girls because of the obvious horn.
There are clues here and there that things are not what they seem, but in general they can be ignored. Then episode 21 hits, hard. It pulls every single cliché on its head. Those clues before come rushing in and everything clicks into place. It’s “horrifying”.
Unfortunately, I was too young when I watched it first, so I can’t remember that WHAM moment.
Me: Ok, ok, ok I realize upon the 2nd re-watching how important and well-done this series is, I'll buy the DVD boxset to give the studio money for it-- *only dvd boxset available is the same rare and expensive one produced back in like 2001* Me: ... does GAINAX not want all of these frothing nerds and otaku's money? Do they not realize how much they could be making right now? ... Why are the Japs like this, making everything exclusive and limited edition, or whatever?
