Interview with Rex Koo:
What is your favorite topic for creation? Why?
I’ve read a book lately and found the following line: “art is the language of the soul”. This line is very true and accurate - art itself is indescribable through language. Everyone’s feeling is different. Apart from this, I fall in love with dance after watching Wim Wenders’ movie, "PINA".
What do you want to convey through your works in RMM ARTBOOKS?
My initial intention of drawing self-portraits is to record the change in myself, as well as my condition of everyday, from my very own face. This art book condenses my life in the past three years. It has also recorded some very obvious traces of change.
What do you feel after receiving your own RMM ARTBOOKS?
My first impression is that the printing is superb, because the medium in most of my drafts is either watercolor or ink. The outcome printed on the type of paper selected is almost exactly the same with my drafts.
What’s your next plan?
Apart from carrying on drawing self-portraits, I’m planning to portray some acquaintances of mine now. The methodology to be adopted will differ from that of my self-portrait’s, but both will be mutually connected. Besides, I realize that human hand is also something that worths recording.
Do you collect art books? Can you tell us about your first art book collected?
I love collecting a particular type of Japanese manga. To me, manga is more than manga itself; it is art. Apart from that, I also love collecting photography books of Nobuyoshi Araki. My first set of art book collected should be Andy Warhol and Dali’s work collection, published by Taschen. Since I was still a Design student by that time, I could afford only a paperback one.
