#MayTheFork Star Wars Cooking: Rey’s Portion Bread
Hello! I am taking a small break from the regularly scheduled programming of FFXV food to bring you a dish from a different universe! The amazing @mymainisacook is hosting a Fandom Foodies Star Wars linkup this month (here!), so here is my novice-level contribution. :) The dish is Rey’s (inflatable) portion bread, which shows up in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens!
NOTE: I am not the original creator of this recipe! Instead, it is adapted from the bread recipe found on the official Star Wars website, here. Please consider this an exercise in “what if I don’t have half the ingredients in a recipe?!” :) Anyways, let’s get started!
INGREDIENTS 1/2 tsp vegetable oil 3 1/2 tbsp flour 1/2 tbsp cornstarch 1 tbsp sugar 1/2 tsp matcha powder 1/12 tsp (a pinch?) baking soda pinch of salt 2 tbsp vanilla-flavored almond milk
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Soak some vegetable oil in a paper towel and smear it on the inner base and sides of a mug. This greases the mug.
2. Add the dry ingredients to the mug: flour, cornstarch, sugar, matcha powder, baking soda, salt. Don’t forget the baking soda! This happened to me the first time :’) Stir thoroughly.
3. Add the almond milk, and mix. This shrinks the contents of the mug; don’t be alarmed.
4. Nuke the mug on high in the microwave for 45 seconds. If the contents still don’t look cooked, nuke again in 5 second increments. I ended up having to do so twice.
5. Let cool, and enjoy! Appreciate the fact that this “portion bread” probably tastes better than whatever Rey was eating in the movie. :)
CHANGES FROM THE ORIGINAL RECIPE (which can be found here) First off, I didn’t have cake flour. Happily, Google says the proper substitute is 7/8 flour, 1/8 cornstarch, which I followed. Secondly, I didn’t have baking powder. Google instructed me to use 1/3 of the volume of baking soda, and add an acidic component. Didn’t have the acidic component, but it turned out fine. ^^ And finally, I didn’t have whole milk. Or vanilla extract. Luckily, I had some vanilla-flavored almond milk, which solved both problems! And thus ends the brief baking adventures of a noob who has zero experience with making sweets. :)
