After everything was said and done, Ben still wasn’t certain what the future was going to hold. Rey was alive, Palpatine was gone, he was on borrowed time, and he couldn’t begin to process it all at once. Part of him wanted to ask what Rey was going to do now that the galaxy seemed to be in less danger but he didn’t.
They’d long since returned to a nearby Resistance ship and Ben couldn’t find it in him to celebrate the victory. It wasn’t his place. He’d contributed to so much over the past few years that celebrating among them would be a slap in their faces. So he stayed near the edge of the room, drinking whatever he could find and watching the others.
Upon seeing Rey, he smiled at her and lifted his leg off the nearest chair to give her a place to sit. “Pretty lively tonight,” he mentioned. Ben didn’t raise his eyes to look at her. He couldn’t. “So what happens now? I doubt the Republic is going to let me walk away a free man from this.”
