Rating: ★★★★★
A classic Gilmore Girls film - Casablanca. I’ve seen it many times and it gets better with every viewing. It’s just one of those untouchable classics AND it helps play out one of my fave Javajunkie episodes (4x05, Fundamental Things Apply) where Luke and Loreai have movie night. It’s just a great episode.
Anyway back to the film. Wicked acting, funny that because Ingrid Bergman was so tall Humphrey Bogart wore platform shoes or stood on a box - Bogart, the king of making things cool before Tom Cruise tried to make things cool. This film is so fucking quotable too, so many famous lines - also the top miss quoted, I’ll have no ‘Play it again Sam’ bullshit :’)
Five stars obviously. Cannot be faulted.

1x18, The Third Lorelai (2001) Rory quotes a famous line from the film when getting Tristan to ask out Paris
TRISTIN: You want me to date Paris?
RORY: Just think about it.
TRISTIN: [exhales loudly] Me and Paris.
RORY: Louis, I think this is the beginning of a wonderful friendship.
TRISTIN: Who’s Louis?
RORY: Just think. [leaves]
4x02, The Lorelais’ First Day at Yale (2003) When Rory finds out that Paris shares a room with her she says, “Of all the gin joints…”, a reference to Rick’s famous quote.
PARIS: I’m going to Yale.
RORY: You’re going to Yale.
PARIS: And we’re suitemates.
RORY: Of all the gin joints.
4x05, The Fundamental Things Apply (2003) Lorelai and Luke watch the movie, several references and mentions of the film throughout.
LORELAI: Well, come on, tell me. I don’t want to get something you’ve seen.
LUKE: Don’t worry about it. I haven’t seen anything.
LORELAI: People always say that.
LUKE: Well, with me, it’s true.
LORELAI: “Casablanca”?
LUKE: Nope.
LORELAI: You have never seen “Casablanca”? Are you kidding?
LORELAI: I got you a nice, cold beer.
LUKE: Appreciate it.
LORELAI: Okay. You are one click away from “Casablanca.”
LUKE: Start it up.
LORELAI: No, whoa, whoa, whoa. We need to get situated. Are you all situated?
LUKE: I’m situated.
LORELAI: You need to, like, squish around a little.
LUKE: I don’t need to.
LORELAI: Come on, squish around a little bit.
LUKE: I’m fine how I am.
LORELAI: Okay, but, uh, you can’t squish during the movie because it’s distracting. That’s rule number one.
LUKE: There’s rules?
LORELAI: Oh, yeah, especially for a true classic like “Casablanca.” It’s not like we’re watching a there’s-nothing-else-on movie or a guilty pleasure like “Hardbodies.” Oh, my God. Have you seen “Hardbodies”?
LUKE: I don’t think so.
LORELAI: Three middle-aged guys rent a beach house and they hire this young local stud to introduce them to cute girls, a.k.a. “Hardbodies.”
LUKE: Let’s see that.
LORELAI: No, Luke, we’re seeing “Casablanca.”
LUKE: Then let’s see that.
LUKE: You know what I mean. You’re watching me watch the movie. It’s creepy.
LORELAI: I enjoy watching people watch certain parts of certain movies.
LUKE: But you look over just before something big happens, so I always know something’s coming.
LORELAI: Oh, I do?
LUKE: You did it just before Humphrey Bogart saw Ingrid Bergman for the first time.
LORELAI: Well, she’s the costar. You knew something was coming.
LORELAI: Aah! You’re fast-forwarding.
LUKE: Well, we’ll not gonna get through this thing. I just wanna get to the good parts.
LORELAI: There are no bad parts of “Casablanca.” Just go back. Back. I’m gonna go grab dessert.
HUMPHREY BOGART: [On screen as Rick] Go ahead and shoot, you’ll be doing me a favour.
LORELAI: Yup. [hangs up] I know just how you feel, Rick.
LUKE: Shh.
LORELAI: Tsk.
RORY: Tell me he didn’t fall asleep during “Casablanca.”
LORELAI: No, we made it through “Casablanca.” He fell asleep during “Hardbodies.”
RORY: How do you fall asleep during a classic like “Hardbodies”?
4x10, The Nanny and the Professor (2004) Lorelai quotes Rick’s “we’ll always have Paris” line when talking about Asher sleeping with Paris
LORELAI: Well, what would the school say if they knew about this?
RORY: Yes, what about that? This guy’s risking everything - his job, his reputation.
LORELAI: Yes, well…he’ll always have Paris.
RORY: How long have you been waiting with that one?
LORELAI: I just had a feeling the opportunity would present itself eventually.
7x04, ’S Wonderful, ’S Marvelous (2006) Lorelai concludes that she and Christopher ruin movies by seeing them together and says that they can never watch Casablanca together.
CHRISTOPHER: No, we made the movies bad. Think about it we are the common factor.
LORELAI: Ohh.
CHRISTOPHER: All the movies – very different. Different genres – different languages, even. We saw them in different theatres at different times. What do they all have in common?
LORELAI: They were all seen by us. Wow!
CHRISTOPHER: Huh!
LORELAI: We can never see “Casablanca” together. I mean I’m very sorry. I don’t care how much I love it, but I will not be responsible for ruining “Casablanca.”
7x07, French Twist (2006) Lorelai tells Christopher that they’ll always have Paris, quoting Rick’s words to Ilsa.
CHRISTOPHER: Well it doesn’t have to end. When we get back to Stars Hollow, we can sleep all day and wander the town in the night, and… that stuff we did back in the hotel room – we can definitely do that back in stars hollow.
LORELAI: Are you saying we’ll always have Paris?
CHRISTOPHER: I’m saying I love you, Lorelai.
7x11, Santa’s Secret Stuff (2007) Lorelai references this movie when talking about her stream of consciousness when trying to write Luke’s recommendation letter.
LORELAI: Because my brain is a wild jungle full of scary gibberish. “I’m writing a letter. I can’t write a letter. "Why can’t I write a letter? I’m wearing a green dress. "I wish I was wearing my blue dress. "My blue dress is at the cleaners. ”’The Germans wore gray. You wore blue. “Casablanca’. ”‘Casablanca’ is such a good movie. “'Casablanca.’ The white house. Bush. "Why don’t I drive a hybrid car? I should drive a hybrid car. "I should really take my bicycle to work. "Bicycle. Unicycle. Unitard. Hockey puck. Rattlesnake. Monkey, monkey, underpants.”
A Year in the Life: Fall (2016) Upon running into Dean at the market, Rory quotes a famous line of the film.
[Rory accidentally bumps into Dean]
RORY: Sorry!
DEAN: Hey
RORY: Well hello! of all the gin joints in all the world, it’s so good to see you
DEAN: You too.
I know this is a massive jump ahead but I was on a Barbra kick after seeing her in Hyde Park and remembered it was referenced. Absolutely loved it... I thought I had seen it before but apparently not! Beaut Mandy Patinkin is beaut. I laughed I cried just so good. One of my favourite films of all time.

A Year in the Life: Fall (2016) Colin and Finn call Rory Yentl from the film.
ROBERT: She seems pale.
RORY: I'm always pale.
FINN: She seems sadly dressed for the fields.
ROBERT: Or riding in boxcars.
COLIN: Or perhaps she's passing herself off as a boy.
FINN: Like Yentl.
COLIN: Tell me, girl, are you Yentl?
RORY: Well, it is Friday, so
COLIN: Men, I believe we've arrived just in time
