My latest read🥰 Isn’t it gorgeous?? Hands down one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever seen, like WOW!! (Almost up there with Jennifer Nielsen books, I’d say) Now, I only just finished chapter 2 before posting this, but it is really good so far. I love Freya! (Might as well put the summary here for you guys)

Twenty-third in line for the throne, Freya never dreamed of a life in the palace, and would much rather research in her laboratory than participate in the intrigues of court. However, when an extravagant banquet turns deadly and the king and those closest to him are poisoned, Freya suddenly finds herself on the throne. • She may have escaped the massacre, but she is far from safe. The nobles don’t respect her, her councilors want to control her, and with the mystery of who killed the king still unsolved, she knows that a single mistake could cost her the kingdom- and her life. • Freya is determined to survive, and that means uncovering the murderers herself. Until then, she can’t trust anyone. Not her advisers. Not the king’d dashing and enigmatic illegitimate son. Not even her own father, who always wanted the best for her but also wanted more power for himself. • As Freya’s enemies close in and her loyalties are tested, she must decide if she is ready to rule and, if so, how far she is willing to go to keep the crown.

I read Rhiannon Thomas’ Long May She Reign

I was curious about this book after I read the author’s essay on Cinderella. This is the second book she had wrote, and its not bad. The mystery plot is actually decent, with plausible suspects and you think that they were taken off the Person of Interest list, but then evidence pops up. I liked the main character, and her interests in science and wanting to just get out of court and make new discoveries, but then she has to be queen and learns what that means. 

There were a few things though- the kingdom is fictional, with a fantasy religion and mythology. It felt like kiddie Game of Thrones. Then there’s a secondary antagonist who is just a rigid moron who is just the worst. 

Other than that, its okay. I like the story, the developments (with the mystery and the relationships) and the main cast. The main cast is actually a lot of fun.

Book Review: Long May She Reign - Rhiannon Thomas

In essence, this is a very practical, accurate approach to depicting  a science-minded character. She’s like 47th in line for the throne and is dragged to a royal function when she’d much rather be tinkering in her lab. She leaves the party early and goes back to tinkering... and everyone who doesn’t leave the party abruptly dies, catapulting our Science-y MC into the spotlight... It’s fabulous, as far as unique story set-ups go.

The Science approach was very refreshing, as was the stand-alone completeness of the story. The very end felt a little rushed to me, but other than that, the pacing was absolutely excellent. And the protagonist's awareness of her inexperience, tendency to panic, and fallibility as a narrator was fantastic. The balance of character types and individual personalities was delightful, and all the twists and turns were very well conveyed, and very well disguised, so while the cast count was fairly limited, each character was utilized to a fulfilling extent. The main appeal of this is two-fold: First that it’s a stand alone story. How often does that happen successfully in Teen Fiction? Second, that there’s real SCIENCE, legitimate chemistry, involved in crucial functions of the plot in a fantasy universe. And it takes on the argument of science and magic being separate entities in a world that resembles the era when Alchemy was interchangeable with Chemistry, and where Astrology and Astronomy were pretty much the same thing as well. So, kudos for that, Rhiannon Thomas! Definitely one of my favorites.

Appropriate for: Mature 11~12 year olds, and up.
