#DrawDaily #422: Rhinochimaera. Ink, 7 x 7".
A haunting Smallspine Spookfish (Harriotta Haeckeli) for this week's #halloween themed #sundayfishsketch . This painting of this deep sea dweller was inspired by the Hydrographer Canyon video from NOOA's 2013 Okeanos Explorer Program and Nightmare Before Christmas's Zero. The #rhinochimaera 's long nose is used to sense prey in the dark depths and the 1st dorsal fin hides a venomous spine. #spookfish #scicomm #fishart #sciart #zero #nightmarebeforechristmas #noaa #okeanos #hydrographercanyon (at Atlantic Ocean) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4ZmMwrlfRI/?igshid=1qgezjygewmme

The Pacific Spookfish, Rhinochimaera pacifica. Gouache on dark paper, 2007.
These 1.2m (4ft) cartilaginous fish live in the dark depths of the ocean, and use their huge snouts to sense their surroundings and find food.
They also have a venomous spine just in front of their dorsal fin.
