Let me tell you a little bit about my horrible, awful, no good, very bad day in DayZ Standalone that turned into one of my most successful play sessions to date. Sort of a long post, but I think you'll enjoy the story.
The above map very roughly shows the path I took in DayZ today from start to finish. It all started in a small town east of Three Valleys, a spawn point I was not familiar with. Surprisingly, as many people that were on the server, I was not met by some fresh-spawn killing baddie bandit within the first five minutes. I headed west inland because I knew that any coast city would be either picked clean or camped by bandits. Along the way to Msta, I encountered a poor individual who seemed down on his luck; a fresh spawn who had broken his legs by a three foot fall from the stairs of a barn. He begged me to kill him, so I did. Things didn't get interesting until I reached Shakhovka, where my starvation started to set in as my stomach had been growling since Staroye. I had in my inventory: A fire extinguisher, some bandages, and 3 cans of food. But, guess what? Nothing to fucking open them with. As my hunger grew worse I eventually slipped into "you are dying of starvation" mode. I knew I had to find something to open my cans. I flagged down a passerby and asked him if he had any food, turns out he was in my same predicament. We parted ways. Dying of starvation I knew I had to do something, I ran as fast as I could to Dolina. Vision fading, it had become almost black and white by the time I reached the ghost town. Desperate, I started calling into my mic for anyone nearby to hear, "Please someone help me, I'm DYING of starvation! Someone? ANYONE!? :(" But no one answered my pleas for help. But then...on my last legs I crawled into a house.
There it was, as beautiful as ever, a can opener sitting right on the table. "THERE IS A GOD!" I exclaimed to the zombies who were the only ones around who could hear me. Clinging onto dear life, I made my way through Polana, Dubrovka, and Krasnostav with little to no struggles. I picked up a backpack and a medkit along the way. A lot of zombies, but nothing I couldn't handle.
Then I hit the motherload, at least for me it was. I've never made it to a military spawn zone before but I made it to the airstrip where I found a combat vest, combat boots, a hunter's backpack, lots of food and sodas, a fire axe, and a .357 magnum revolver. Granted, I had not found any rounds for it, but it sure would put a scare in any unarmed hostile that I came across. However, that issue was solved quicky as I made my way into Gvozdno where I found six rounds for it. Then my world got dark again. "Help...helllp..." I hear. "Hellllllp. I'm unconscious :(" It was my friend Stephen, we had separated for some time. I wanted to catch up with him but...not like this. He had passed out from hunger. I tried to force feed him food, and I frantically searched the town for a defibrillator or an epipen. I could not find one, the force feeding didn't work. He was suffering. "Just...just put me down." He says weakly. One sharp blow to the head was all it took. His suffering was over.
But mine had only begun. That ends my horrible-yet-successful day in DayZ Standalone.
PRESIDENT NIXON 2012!!
I rather die a hero than live long enough to see myself become a villain.
I saw this at the bottom of a statement by RhinoCrunch! I dunno who actually made it but I like this quote.
